Hey everyone -

I'm about to start my Junior year and after researching most of the DO schools, I think I've decided KCOM is about the perfect match for me. Trouble is that I had something of a lackluster GPA, finishing with a Sci GPA of 2.7 and a Cum. GPA of 2.8. During this time I didn't have any real focus and had not decided about a career path. The summer between freshman and sophomore year I did a lot of thinking, some shadowing and decided that I definately wanted to go to medical school. In order to bring up my GPA, I took a ton of classes last year (44hrs). It sort of back-fired because I didn't do as well as I would have liked. I ended up pulling a 3.5 cum. GPA and a 3.52 science GPA. This leaves by overall for both science and cum. at just under 3.3. Assuming that I do about the same academically next year I should be apply with between a 3.4 and a 3.5. How well will I need to do on the MCAT have a decent shot at KCOM? I should note that I've got a lot of extr-curriculers. I spent a year as I autism therapist (freshman), a year and a summer doing basic science research (sophomore, I plan on continuing this throught college), have been a member of several leadership organizations and will be a student housing RA next year. Any advice or comments will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

You will need a 29.53 MCAT score.

I'm kidding...as with lotto, you can't win (get into med school) if you don't play (apply).

daveswaf,
I think you have a very good chance. One thing I think admission office's look for is an upward trend during your undergrad career. If your gpa keeps going up steadily every year, admissions will notice. Your extra-curriculers are also important. It looks like you have a good balance of clinical and research. I would recommend that you continue shadowing, especially with D.O.s. This shows a long term commitment and will help you get a letter of recommendation down the road. As for the MCAT, just do your best. KCOM takes a lot of things into account. You are right to be considering that school - it's excellent. I am currently a KCOM student, so please PM/email me if you have any specific questions. Good luck.

daveswaf, if you're really interested in KCOM I highly encourage you to get in touch with their admissions office and talk to them about your situation and future goals in osteopathic medicine. They're extremely helpful and understanding and will give you guidance.

I visited KCOM and spoke to the admissions people there, and the school definitely deserves its reputation! Good luck and keep us posted.

If your academics are at or above the KCOM averages, I think you'll be OK. If you do manage to raise your cumulative and sci. GPAs to 3.4-.5, you should be fine. I'd say an MCAT score at or above 26/27 would be good enough to make you competive(I believe that's around the school's average). I'm not saying you should shoot for just a 27, but you know what I mean. 😀

Best of luck to you,
