So I just saw my gpa posted to CSDCAS today. I went to school for business and my GPA was around 2.8. When I transferred into CSD my GPA was 3.5-4.0 from junior to senior year. However, with my cum GPA being at 3.1 I am very nervous 🙁

My CSD gpa is at 3.56 so that is good but 3.1 as an overall does NOT look good at all. Do schools look at the whole picture (as in steady increase in motivation/grade point) or do they just see the overalls? :scared:

UGGHHh the next few months are gonna be some of the most stressful I've ever faced.

My GRE was not great either (800) so I am kind of regretting not taking it again....I guess if worst comes to worst I could just reapply next year. I know I can do this! I was just a dumb kid when I started college and was never motivated.

My advice is don't put your eggs in one basket. If you still can retake the GRE, I know some school have a deadline in Feb so you just might make it.

Dustbug,

I'm applying to wayne state, u of pitt, cuny, western mich, purdue and a few others.

Big al, only one of the schools has a deadline of feb. I talked to a prof of mine and he said schools just want to see you take it and its not really an indicator of potential. Also, I scored high on the writing so that is good (I guess lol). I have also been one of the few active male participants in nsslha. I was on the exec board for a year. I also volunteered for 4 hrs a week at a hospital as well as at a local Deaf organization. Also, I've made the deans list the past year and a half.

I have a lot going for me, I think, but there's no denying my gpa is a bit low :/

the extra curricular activities are def. a big plus. your prof is correct about saying that its not an indicator of your potential, however, schools still look at them and will determine admission based on several factors including gre's. my personal opinion is that you have enough to get into a program. Make sure you have strong rec. letters from recent professors, because that will show your current involvement in your studies and work ethic.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure all 3 of my professors wrote strong letters of rec. I had one of them for 2 years, every semester. I specifically asked him to comment on my ability to perform in graduate school and he said he would do so, hopefully that helps some.

Just sent out my last packet to CUNY today. Now, I play the waiting game. :scared:

Hi Everyone,

I finally got the courage to sign up and finally post something 😀 This post really interests me because I'm pretty much on the same boat as SufjanS. I'm constantly stressing over admissions, even though it's still a year away for me. I was hoping current AuD students could advise me on things I can do to boost my acceptance to a program.

I'm currently a senior in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology major, but I won't be graduating for another year. My problem is that my GPA isn't as strong as most applicants. My current cumulative GPA is 3.138 (currently retaking some courses to boost it up) and my current major GPA is around a 3.475. I have a few dean's list here and there.

I'm not graduating this spring semester because I'm currently trying to finish my biology and psychology minors. I'm also a school audiometrist (for two years now) and I have a few volunteer work (I plan on doing more). In addition, I have a certificate in ASL. I have taken my GRE recently, but it was well below the average. I plan on taking it again this summer, since it's so difficult to study for the GRE while schools going on.

Sorry if it sounds like i'm "bragging" but I just want to know others input 😛 Especially since some of you have been in my shoes.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to increase my chances? Any classes I should take or places I should volunteer? Programs that are more likely to accept someone like me? Any advice would be great!

😍 It's nice to be able to talk to AuD students/major because at my school there about three of us amongst 100+ SLP majors.

At least CSDCAS has calculated your GPA! I submitted my application January 3 and they still haven't calculated it.... Hoping that I still have a chance at those schools since the deadlines have now passed!

I know exactly what you mean. I thought I had to submit my transcripts before the school deadline, but found out that it takes CSDCAS 4-6 weeks to process from the day they receive to process and send to respective schools. Had me freaked out but called each school and they said it was okay as long as the application was completed before the deadline. According to some schools, CSCDAS has been slow for last couple of years, but they're getting better. Anyhow, they received my last transcript on 12/14, but GPA still has not been calculated. I guess it COULD take more than 6 weeks. 😡

I think you're certainly on the right track with improving your GPA. I would like to think strong academic recovery triumphs over initial procrastination; as long as the improvement is consistent!

I'm currently tutoring a friend for the GRE, and the best study advice I can give you is don't waste hours memorizing words which you'll likely never see. Take practice tests and look for tips for verbal (i.e. fill in the blanks - answer in your head before you even look at the choices). I think the writing is important, too. I'm that strange kind of geek that really likes standardized tests, so I understand this may daunting if you hate them, but, the practice tests were so helpful to me that my score improved every time I took it, with my top score being the one which counted. Not that I scored like an engineer or anything 🙂

I really do think most schools look at everything. Have a strong personal statement. If you're interested in research, include something about this. Applicants who have ambitions to publish and bolster the scholarship of the field are rare at the application stage, so if this is something you're considering it will likely have an impact. (You should really want to, of course 🙂 )

Choose references of those you admire and truly want endorsement from rather than the one teacher who was just okay but gave you an A.

Outside activities and service are great, of course. It may help to observe and volunteer with an audiologist.

Sorry for the diatribe. I'm sure someone else may have differing/better advice. I only applied to one university, but part of my graduate assistantship was working in the department office, so I became really familiar with admissions type stuff.

Good luck!

Yeah, It's really frustrating! They just withdrew my application because I translated my course titles from study abroad into English, so then they didn't match up with the Spanish titles on my transcript. I have no idea how that's going to look that I had to resubmit my application on 2/12! Luckily, I had my transcripts sent individually to the schools on there, and I think they've come to expect that CSDCAS takes an unreasonably long time.

Where did you study abroad? I went to Argentina in 2008! I had a blast...also had trouble with my transcript. Hope everything got straightened out for you!

I studied abroad for a semester in Madrid, Spain, but have also spent summers in Ecuador and Costa Rica, all of which were awesome experiences. Mine was fine once I made a few simple changes-guess I had entered it wrong, but the transcripts themselves were fine.
