Do I have any shot at MD schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
US MD schools typically do not do grade replacement. What is your overall GPA with all the classes that you have taken? If you really have your head on straight now and can do extremely well in those classes, you have a reasonable chance with good prep of doing quite well on the MCAT. My guess is that DO is by far the best avenue open to you, but with a high enough MCAT, severe upward trend etc, I don't know why certain US MDs wouldn't take a long hard look at you. @Goro thoughts?

With the classes I've taken, it would be a 3.08.

Thats one of the reasons Im not rushing the MCAT to try to fit into this cycle. I realize that the only thing that can retain any shot at MD for me is to absolutely blow the MCAT out of the water. For this reason, I'm not electing to apply for a Post-bac program for the 15-16 year either. I'd rather focus on the MCAT and really kill it.

So is it fair to say that while DO is a strong possibility, my MD chances are dependent on the MCAT?

Without a 33+ MCAT, your chances at US MD is next to nil. That I can say with pretty high certainty. Because of grade replacement in DO, you have a pretty solid footing for a lot of their schools. Most US MD schools are going to see 3.0/MCAT score and going to not give you a second look. Are there some out there that would give you a long hard look? Yes. They are all lower tier and those are the ones that with a decent MCAT score should be the ones you target. As to your realistic potential to get into one of them, I would defer to some of the faculty adcoms on here like Goro and @gyngyn as I am rapidly getting out of my depth.

Don't think you are just going to walk into DO schools no problem. Your GPA is low for DO schools your gonna have to retake a bunch and have a strong MCAT for DO. A science GPA below 3 will not fly for DO schools. Youre gonna have to get a sgpa above 3 and have an MCAT at 28 or above to have a chance with that GPA. Not to mention you should have good ECs as well. For MD you're gonna need to do more.

I understand that. My sGPA with retakes is a 3.8. That applies for DO schools only though because of the Grade replacement.

3.8 or 3.08? That's a big difference. A 3.08 will require a very good MCAT for DO. A 3.8 you have some leeway but still need to do above average

Yeah a 3.8 -- again, thats factoring in grade replacement. Like I said in the original post, I retook several courses this past two semesters and got A's in most everything.

Great chance at DO with grade replacement. No chance at MD without a preposterously fantastic MCAT score.

I'll respond to @dimemag in WAMC when the MCAT is available... Thanks for the AMA, btw.

I concur with my learned colleague. There are MD schools that value reinvention, along with a killer MCAT (equivalent of 33+ score).
Schools like these include Case, Duke, Vandy, BU, Tufts, Wayne State, U Miami, Tulane, and SUNY Upstate. I'd also include your state schools, if any, and a good number of the lower tiers, like Rosy Franklin, Rush, Wake Forest, etc.

But throw in a mix of DO schools to be on the safe side.

Good luck!

Concur again! You're 2/2 mimes.

It doesn't hurt to apply. No one can say what will happen for sure. Give both a try. And get to know some people from the school you're interested in. Meet with the admissions directors and have them look over your file and let you know your chances. Good luck!
