do i have reason to be nervous at this point or am i just being overanxious?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which school are you attending? (Might be a dumb question considering your name... But, your profile says Dook was your undergrad school).

Just wondering... b/c I don't want to have to give a presentation my first week. However, if i do, I know I won't be alone.

It does make me wonder how often we'll have to give presentations during our medical careers. Can anyone help answer this?

If it is to be often that we give presentations, we might as well get used to it early...

We didn't have to give presentations until anatomy...we had a lot of quizzes though---most were really laid back and did not count much at all...just for you to know how you are doing in the class.

I say just relax and don't worry about a thing at this point. Enjoy your summer while it lasts! 👍

are you sure it's not a presentation given by the second year students?

hi all

TarHokie, haha i should update my profile. duke was my undergrad school. (go devils!) are u headed to UNC? congrats if u are, it's a great school. i am going to be at USC - Keck School of Medicine. southern cal will be a nice change from dreary durham... but i must say, chapel hill is WAY better than durham.

Congrats on USC. I'm a little jealous of the climate you'll be in.
Yep, I'm headed to UNC. Just kidding about the "dook" thing. I've always been a fan. That may change soon, though...

but i was looking over the schedule for the first few weeks and apparently we have a student presentation during the FIRST WEEK.

presenting information accurately and concisely will be a critical skill when you start clinical rotations, and will be a skill you use throughout your career. as a medical student in the hospital you will often be the first person to see a new patient, and will need to be able to present his or her story to the resident or attending quickly and accurately. think of all of the silly and at times annoying presentations you will be made to do during your first 2 years (e.g. my 8 minute presentation on the biochemistry of Tay Sachs early in first year, and so on) as honing your skills to sift through information and make a clear point. naturally part of the goal is to learn also, but don't get so caught up in the idea of making a perfect presentation that you start worrying even before school starts. you will see that many times the professors are only half-paying attention, if at all, and you may wind up spending hours on a presentation that contributes 0.05% to your final grade in a given course. it's good practice, but certainly not something to freak out over (and this can be said about most anything you will be made to do during your first two years that does not involve memorizing facts for Step 1, or learning clinical skills that you might really use one day).

relax, enjoy your last few weeks before life gets busy again.

relax

its not that bad. if you got in youll do finr

hahaha no hard feelings TarHokie. i get the "dook" thing all the time...especially from my older brother who graduated from UNC. so are u from north carolina? where did u go to undergrad?

Born in NC, but grew up in Virginia. Went to Virginia Tech undergrad.
Did my post-bacc classes at NC State.

I'm making my rounds through the ACC, it seems. I guess I'll have to do my residency at somewhere in the ACC to keep up the streak.. 😉

What about you? From NC? or heading back to Cali? Since your brother went to UNC I'm guessing you are from Carolina.

lol really? i just know that some people in undergrad had a way of psyching others out and i have this image of med school where some people are going to be smart or just act smart and then pounce on other people in order to belittle them and then make themselves feel more important.

From my experience this is the way it is regardless of your profession. Of course I can only speak from the experience of ONE other profession.

(this may apply more during residency) im sure this does not apply to most students (well i hope) and especially not at USC because it doesn't seem cutthroat...definitely unlike the horror stories ive heard about johns hopkins...

Don't believe everything you hear about Hopkins ...

relax...i'll be there going through the same stuff as you will be...and i won't "pounce"..................i promise 🙂
