Hi,
I'm doing my 4th year residency training in Taiwan. I just wondered if there is any possibility that I can apply fellowship in United States after I finished my residency program in Taiwan. I will pass all my USMLE steps recently, but I really don't want to start it all over again in US.
Thanks a lot!

You can likely find a US fellowship, though it will be more difficult than if you were a US grad. Issue is, if you want to practice in the US, you will either have to repeat your residency here or work in an academic setting. You cannot be a private practice ophthalmologist in the US without having completed a US residency.

There is a strabismus surgeon from India in my optometry school. He jumped straight into 3rd year. Something to think about.

I am exactly in your situation. Are you done with all the USMLE exams? How long did it take? To answer your question, as far as I know, if you want to train there in US and return to home country, it is possible but hard. If you want to practice in US with green card etc, you must repeat residency. I have heard it is almost impossible to get into.

I'm thinking of doing this too...I am finishing my fellowship and I was thinking if you would need to change your career objectives at ECFMG before they sponsor your J1. Would it mean its less likely to be accepted?
