Do I need a Masters?

My cum Gpa will be abt a 2.7 and my science gpa a 2.5. I was advised to go into a masters program ... will this increase my chance of getting in?

I think it can help, I was in a similar situation, low undergrad GPA, and I completed a MS in biology and I really think that it will help by showing I can handle upper-level classes; plus there are usually some research opportunities that you might be able to help with.

For me, it was a good decision.

For you it was a good decision because you got in or because you think it looks nice and you're living in a dream world?

And for the original poster, you don't need a masters, you need to give up and find a new career choice. Or change your name, social security number, start college from scratch, and attempt to get a gpa that resembles dentists and not dental hygenists.

Previous poster could not be more wrong. My undergrad gpa was ~2.8 with science being slightly lower. I starting taking more upper division bio and chem courses and getting all A's. Then started a MS in Bio program but will not be able to complete the degree as I was accepted to UMich this year. If you want to go to dental school you can, but your timeline will be more delayed than most. Just a heads up

Do you need a masters? Yes.

Will it increase your chances of getting in? Yes, if you do well...

do not listen to "justforthispost" if you want to be a dentist bad enough then do whatever you can to raise those grades and i'm sure someone will see your drive and let you in.

i'm applying this coming cycle and if i dont get in this time around i'm going to do a masters and try again

You weren't required to finish your masters before entering Dental School? Do all schools allow this or just some with UMich being one of them?

That GPA will be very hard to overcome. However if you nail all your master's courses it can have an impact and show you are the caliber of student that D-schools are looking for. You will also need to do very well on the DAT.

First of all, Congrats to your acceptance!!!

May I ask you if you needed to raise your undergrad GPA with a postbacc, even after a Masters? (Meaning, was it still a ~2.8 when you got in?)

To the OP, do a search for the 'Under 3.0 Club' and that will give you an idea of the number of people that have been in a similar position as you.
