Do I need medical malpractice tail coverage if I'm switching employers but staying within the same insurance company? Assuming remaining in the same geographic area, currently claims made policy, practicing for less than 2 years, and no gaps between policies.

Specifically PICA coverage.

Not if in same state and there is no gap in coverage I believe.

If your policy is occurrence based you don’t need a tail. I always suggest fighting for that.

How long do you pay for tail coverage? How long do you have to keep it?

Tail coverage is a one time fee that should cover you during statutes of limitations of that state. If you switch jobs your tail coverage will cover you for two to three years (max length of statutes of limitations in most states). Any claims during that time after you left will be covered by your medical malpractice insurance.
