Hey guys,

I recently came to the conclusion that I want to pursue Medical School instead of the current major that I was going down. For my major, a full year of General Biology was needed, but there was no lab for Biology I, whereas I did have a lab for Bio II.

I received an A for both semesters and have the full intent of taking upper level bio courses with lab (such as microbiology this upcoming semester), but do I need to have to retake that Bio I course to get all of the pre-reqs for medical school? I will if I need to but I prefer to not have to take a course over again especially because I received an A. Thanks for all the input!

I'm confused. Is there a lab offered for bio 1 and you just didn't take it or what? Your school may allow you to just take the lab since you already completed the course.

Its med school specific on how many labs you need, but most just require one year of lab in bio which can be fulfilled by upper division bio classes with labs. So taking micro with lab will likely suffice.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, Biology I with lab is offered at my school, but was not mandatory for my previous major so I did not take it. Now that I am thinking about switching to the pre-med curriculum, I noticed that a full year of Biology with lab was needed. I'll see if my school will let me just take the lab, otherwise I'll just hope that my upper level bio courses will do.

I asked a question similar to this before, and I'm sure that the upper level bio courses will count because a lot of colleges don't have a bio 1 lab.

Are you sure that Biology course is the same course designed for Bio majors/pre-meds? If it is not, then you will have to retake both of them.

Yeah I'm absolutely certain it was the same class as the pre-meds. My lab partner for the second semester was in the pre-med track

Med schools are lookin to see if you have taken biology 1, and bio 1 lab. They don't care when you took them. You can take either of the labs separate from either of the classes, so you should be fine.

You can use upper level bio courses with lab. Most med school require a year of "biology with lab". Many people I know ap out of gen bio and took biochem and cell bio with lab each one.

My school doesn't even offer Bio I or Bio II lab. Our premed adviser just tells us to make it up with upper division lab courses. You should be fine.

What I'm getting from the OP's posts are that labs are not offered separately ie, one can take a 4 credit bio lecture and lab or a 3 credit bio lecture, but not a 1 credit bio lab.

For anyone that is curious, I called several schools today asking this very question, and the consensus was that upper level bio classes with lab shall suffice. Thanks for all the input tho guys!
