Okay so I've sucked when it's come to chemistry, particularly freshman and sophomore year. I made a C- first semester Gen Chem 1, then retook and got a straight up C second semester and left it at that and moved on with life...and got another C in Gen Chem 2. 🙁 I know I understand the material, I'm doing pretty well in the chemistry portions of the MCAT practice problems I've done, I just got choked up in class!

***My question: a C grade is considered passing right? I know a C- isn't but a C means they'll count the prereq course as done?

Here is a break down of my chem grades, bear in mind I do plan on applying both DO and MD IF I get accepted to the SMPs I plan on applying to and actually do well.

Gen Chem 1: C-
Gen Chem 1 retake: C

Gen Chem 2: C

Orgo 1: C
Orgo 1 retake: B+

Orgo 2: D
Orgo 2 retake: A

Pretty abysmal I know, which is why I'm hoping I can get accepted to an SMP. I just wonder if I need to retake the courses to get them counted. Also as a side note I am taking biochemistry this fall.

ETA: This fall is my last semester and I'll be graduating this winter.

Thanks everyone!

Also, I haven't bought the MSAR yet, would this information be included in it?

What really matters is how your grades are trending. If your grades show a major trend of improvement and your MCAT scores are decent, then you should be fine. I wouldn't keep retaking courses because it gets harder and harder to bring the grade up because most schools average them.

Well I guess it's a good thing that I have a pretty good upward trend! I just wanted to make sure that a C grade is still considered passing. Can't find it in the CIB (DO schools) and haven't looked in the MSAR yet.

Just wondering, has ANYONE gotten into an SMP and subsequently medical school (DO or MD) with Cs in the prerequisites? As of now the 2 sems of general chemistry is the only prerequisite I have Cs in. I've been doing searches but I can't seem to dig anything up.

One C won't kill you. If you have a solid MCAT and otherwise solid GPA, you should be fine.

Thanks, I'm sure 1 C wouldn't kill me, except it's 2 Cs in prerequisites. I think I'm psyching myself out since I'm graduating this coming fall and didn't plan to retake them. I guess I'm just nervous because if I needed to retake to get them to count I should have planned to do that already and since I'm almost out I can't retake them anymore. Ahhh stress. I know AACOMAS won't verify any prereq grades that are C- and below (but will verify a C), is that the same with AMCAS?

Regarding the SMP question, the people who do them don't exactly have some stellar grades so I don't see why you would be worried that a C would bar you from one. Just try and do better in the other courses...keep climbing 🙂

If you have time to make it up, do it. If not, it shouldn't hurt you that much if it's only one C.
