I got accepted to pharmacy school for the fall of 2016. I am also due for my second renewal as a pharmacy tech. Do I still have to take the PTCE or can I just renew as Pharmacy Technician Student?

No, if you are a pharmacy student you do not have to take the PTCE, but you will have to have a letter from your school attesting that you are a student.

That I'm not sure about, I would think as long as your school is willing to write you a letter saying you are a student, that you would be covered. When is your 2 years up? I could see your school being reluctant to write a letter saying you are a student, when you haven't started, esp if your 2 years are up like next month. If your 2 years are up closer to your start date, they might be more willing to write you a letter. If your school won't write you a letter until you start, then your options will be to either take the PTCE or let your renewal lapse until you start school and have the school write you a letter. Will your employer pay for the PTCE? The test isn't that hard to pass, and everything you learn will be directly useful in pharmacy school, so if your employer is paying, I would suggest just taking the PTCE.

Edited to add, of course you are up for renewal in March. I knew that.

If you're just renewing your Cpht, you don't need to take the test again but just complete 21 CEs and science classes like bio/Chem can be used for CE credit (15 to be specific) and then you need I think 1 CE hr of law and 1 CE of inventory or something like that. The rest you can do whatever CEs are available for techs. You can find the 6 CEs online on CE websites for free

Technically you wouldn't need to anyways because you are going to be a student in the fall and wouldn't need it unless you wanted to work until classes started or for P1 if your SOP doesn't give intern status until P2 as well

He is in IL, IL does not have any intern licensing, pharmacy students must hold a pharmacy technician license in order to work in a pharmacy, state law allows them to work as technicians without being a CPHT for 2 years, at which point they must take the CPHT or have a letter from their pharmacy school attesting that they are a student. The OP has never taken the CPHT because he has been in the free 2 year period, his 2 years are up before he starts pharmacy school, so unless he gets a letter from his pharmacy school, he will have to take the CPHT.

Oh wow, thanks for letting me know, I just thought he was talking about him being nationally certified. It would take time to prepare for the test but OP you shouldn't have too much problem since you're going to pharmacy school. The test just consists of laws, sterile processes in the hood, top 200 drugs, and calculations like dosing, concentrations, and rates
