So I have two interviews lined up for next month and wanted to know if I need to update them with my grades. I just completed Ochem II and got an A in the course. I know this is a big prerequisite and will be updating other schools that I have not yet heard from but is it necessary to update a school if they already extended me an interview? I'm thinking it doesn't matter now but not sure what the best thing to do is.

Do you need to? No, but you can update them. I honestly wouldn't update schools with just a new grade unless they specifically ask for it. If you have substantive updates its definitely worth updating both the schools you are waiting for interview decisions from and the schools you have interviewed at, as this new update could play a role in their decision to accept/reject you. Just my two cents.

Oh okay. No major updates, just the grades. I was very hesitant about applying without completing Ochem first as I have heard some medical schools place an emphasis on it. So I thought it might be important to update schools with that.

I mean this is going to be very individual but I would wait until you have something more to say. For example maybe after interviewing you could tie in some updates(including grades) into an update/interest letter. You will probably get varying advice but I doubt 1 Ochem grade will make much of a difference(though I believe some schools make it clear they want to know your pre-req grades so this might be school dependent).

You've already got the interview. You could mention your updated grade in the interview if it is an open record type of interview - they may ask. If the situation arises (what have you been doing since applying, etc) then you could bring it up. But you've already got one of the hardest parts done.

I've never understood the whole O-chem success being the determining class for acceptance to medical school. It is 2 classes and labs and only 8 credits out of the hundred and something you get in the process of earning a degree.

My suggestions is to contact the medical school admissions by email and ask them if they would like an updated transcript or not. Every school's process is different. You could also check the schools SDN application thread http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forums/allopathic-school-specific-discussions-2014.962/

It's a weeding course. But it is helpful in selecting for people who can handle lots of difficult concepts.

Thank you! I already know some schools don't accept updates like UC Davis but I'll inquire with those that do.

Idk why Ochem is such a big deal. It seemed simple to me lol. My engineering courses were much more challenging to me.

Do you think this will change with the new mcat having very little Ochem? Some schools are now allowing people to just take one semester and replace the other with biochem.

I wonder if schools may "discount" this because it's a summer class. Often times, I've heard summer classes, although more condense, also tend to be easier.

Possible. I'd love the see Biochem, Molecular Bio, Cell Bio and Genetics become required courses, and eliminate the Physics requirement.

They may or may not. Idk really. I do know that I got two interview invites before even completing the second semester of ochem , so it must not have been significant enough to kill my application. I learned the material well and I'm not sure how my course was easier because it was the exact same material that they present during the regular year. The only difference is that my labs may have been easier because we didn't have as many formal reports.

We did a chapter a day in my ochem class. There was no curve and the professor said the exams were pretty much the same as during the normal school year. If adcoms are gonna dock me for taking it over the summer it's too late.

This. Just wait until you get a final decision from the school (after you interview). If you get wait-listed, you might want to write a letter of interest/update to the school. Some schools accepts/likes them, others don't.

Finally an ADCOM who thinks the physics requirement is replaceable!
