Do internships really mattter?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends - what’s the internship in? I think they are okay, but one downside is that they are generally less longitudinal (unless its a research internship), and because you are usually compensated, your responsibilities may not sound as good or be as personally enriching.

You probably are aware already, but I would focus on doing whatever it takes to up that GPA. <3.0 is a death sentence for medical school

Undergraduate research internships and yes I have just finished my first semester of freshman year and I am going to work hard to increase my gpa.

Oh, if you are a freshman you can do anything that fancies your interest. Again, GPA is king so drop everything else if you have to, especially for freshman year.

Whether something is an internship or not doesn’t change anything, it’s what you get out of it that matters. That said, it might be difficult to secure a good one this early on so I wouldn’t be too sad if it doesn’t pan out... Plenty of chances ahead, and you can get an equal or even superior experience by just doing research under a professor at your university.

Okay thank you so much! I will only be applying for two internships this year and if not I will try again after my sophomore year!

If I were you I would make that GPA your main focus and not worry about internships. A 2.9 can keep you out of medical school.
