DO Letters
Started by lilzelda
Not all schools require letter from DO.
I didn't know any DOs in the area (I'm not living at home now) either. I found an amazing DO by going to this website, http://www.osteopathic.org/index.cfm?PageID=findado_main, and typing in my current address. Sometimes the phone numbers aren't in the DO's profile, so you might have to look him/her up in a phone book or online.
In my opinion, if you are applying to a DO school, you should be able to talk about DOs on an interview. So even if the school doesn't require a DO letter, it would be beneficial to shadow one anyway. I've been on several interviews and at each one, the interviewer asked me about my shadowing experience. Good luck! 🙂

BluesClues32,
Thanks for the website! It really is helpful. I too am looking for a DO to shadow and don't know of any personally.
Is it really alright to use the website to locate DOs and ask them if we can shadow? I don't want to be stepping on any toes.
Thanks.

I was thinkinbg the same thing before I went to my Drs. appointment the other day. For the first time, I noticed that he was a DO (I was in MCAT studying land and did not notice things during my travel). I asked him for a letter and he agreed and told me how he gets the same question from strangers and tells them that he has to sit and meet with them first. Younger DOs are used to this, you are not stepping on any toes.

Yes. I asked two DOs through faxes if I could shadow them, but only one responded. I highly recommend calling or faxing the office because doctors are too usually too busy to play email tag. I was able to shadow the DO several times within a two week span. After the second visit, I asked if he could write me a letter of recommendation if he felt comfortable. He had no problems, and was glad to help me out. Good luck and have fun!

It seems like that service is for current DO students or new DO graduates.
Did you just e-mail or call one of the mentors and asked if you could shadow?
I'm a premed applying now and I thought the same about that website but took a chance on wednesday got a reply the same day from the service and my mentor. I'm meeting with my mentor next week!!
I did not check a DO school and mentioned that I was a premed student currently applying to DO schools in the messaage box.
thanks hoberto!!

I filled out the form like stoleyerscrubs and just put that I was considering med school. I got an email from a mentor within a week and we emailed back and forth and I got to shadow him today! I first received an email from him in mid-August but my schedule was a big cause for delay until now.
I think it's a great way to find someone to shadow because they must be interested or they wouldn't be part of the program AND you don't have to pester a bunch of office staff until you finally find someone nice.
Everyone should try it!
