DO liscence plates

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been told that in New York State, at least, MDs and DOs can get MD license plates. According to the NYS DMV website there is no DO plate, just an MD one.

But why would you want either one? Not only do you make yourself a target of scams, but you'll be charged up the nose when you take your car to the shop.

It's crap. If you wanna park at the "DOCTORS VEHICLES ONLY" spots in and around the city, flip your ID onto your dashboard and hope for the best. It should work, although the metermaid who thinks she's T. J. Hooker may give you a ticket just for kicks.

I hadnt really considered getting one yet, i was just curious about whether there were DO plates different from MD plates

In NY state DOs can have license plates that say "MD" on them. The state of NY considers you still to be a medical doctor/physician so they don't discriminate with the license plates.

Someone once told me that there used to be an "OP" plate for Osteopathic Physician. Some sort of controversey ended that, though.

If you want MD plates, go for it...just don't get into a fender-bender with your new Mercedes.

Hell, if someone with MD plates hit me, my neck would REALLY hurt. 😉

Actually, Dr. Wu, in NYC MD plates are extremely useful. If you want to park near a hospital - in the MD parking only- you NEED an MD plate. Any other ID will not work and you will get a ticket (which these days are $105). You can also be towed, which is a MAJOR hassle and much more expensive to retrieve the car.

What a dumb post this is. i can't believe people have time to think about this crap. Get a life loser.

This is what I heard...now, it may be just a rumor:
There is already a DO plate--however, it is registered to an order of dominican nuns. Therefore, it cannot be used as a plate for DO's. However, some people are trying to get a separate DO license (I think DOP, for DO physician)...whether or not they get it by the time I get out of school is another story. For now, DO's can definitely get MD plates.

As I said above....don't read-end anybody with those plates on your Mercedes.

I want some plates that say "ASSMAN, D.O." 😀 When I drive down the street people will say, "Hey, Assman, can I get an appointment". Yeah.....that would be so cool!

Trust me, its all about the MD license plates. Hell I wouldn't be doing medicine if it wasnt for them. LOL. To those who dont agree, try rolling up to a club with an MD license plate. You wont just have any light blue toyota camry with chrome rims, you'll have a light blue toyota camry with chrome rims and an MD license plate!!! Huge difference!! Instead of you just staring down the girls at the line, the girls will actually look at you (well, they will be looking at your MD license plates, but close enuf).

NJ is another state where if you want a license plate to reflect your professional status you have to get an MD plate if you are a DO
