Sorry if this is a dumb question, but will medical schools reimburse applicants for traveling costs to their interviews? I am a Canadian citizen if that makes a difference.

Some will. You'd have to call and ask, but there are certain requirements (FAP comes to mind).

So I guess it's a bad idea to take a gap-year job out of country? Because I'd have to pay heavy airflight ticket costs?

There's a number of discussions on this issue, you should do some searching of past threads if you are considering this. It is doable but I think you would want to string your interviews close together so you could make a visit (ie: during the holidays) and do interviews over a couple weeks.

I would be shocked if schools would give an international student any reimbursement for traveling to an interview, let alone international flights. I have heard of schools paying expenses for second look weekend.

At one of my interviews someone actually left their job in Russia to move back to the states because flying back and forth for interviews was terrible.

Usually only MD-PhD/MTSP candidates are provided with things like hotels/dinner. Normal MD candidates nearly universally have to fend for themselves.

This is what I've been told as well.
