Do medical schools know about prior acceptances?

I am reposting this from the re-applicant forum because I think it will receive more traffic here from people who might have the answers:

I have searched and searched this website for a good thread about this subject, but it seems know one knows the real answer. Plenty of folks like to say 'prior acceptances are red flags,' or that the schools will 'know' about previous acceptances. That may be true, but on what authority is such information had?

According to the University of Washington's admissions office: “Medical schools do not have a record of the medical schools applicants have applied to in the past. If this information was provided by the applicant to the Admissions Committee, it could be noted in their file.

“If a school extended an applicant an acceptance, but the applicant chose not to matriculate and reapplies to the same school at a later date, the school will have that on record. Otherwise, another medical school will not have that information on hand. If an applicant was accepted, matriculated, and chose to withdraw into the quarter, then
he/she will need to include that information on the AMCAS application.”

That was from Stella Yee at UW admissions.

She seems to think that schools don't even know where you applied to. Of course, she could be confused or just not know, but I would appreciate it if someone had some verifiable information that could clear up this question.

I emailed AMCAS and asked them what information they provide to schools about re-applicants, but they have yet to get back to me.

Any ideas?

it sounds like you had your answer quoted in your post...do you have a reason to believe that someone in admissions at UW would have false information?

Doesn't AMCAS/TMDSAS ask if you have applied to medical school before and/or if you have been accepted. I'm pretty sure that I remember them asking.

When you submit your application, you agree that all the information that you submit is truthful, and that you can lose your acceptance, get kicked out of class, and/or lose your medical license if it is determined that you lied on your application.

Don't do it.

EDIT: My bad. I just looked at my AMCAS, and it only asks if you have ever previously MATRICULATED. Interesting. If this is true then I'm not sure how the myth that if you turn down an acceptance you are doomed got started. TMDSAS may be different.

Did you get an acceptance before, or just an anxious/neurotic pre-med (pretty much we all are)?

Hi there,
Medical schools do get a list of previous acceptances but not a list of schools applied to. You could apply to 100 schools but only the one that accepted you would show up on the list. There are actually two lists, one is released shortly after May 15th and the other is sent out in late July/early August.

If you were accepted to School X in the previous year but deferred and want to apply to School Y because you did not want to attend School X, you have to give up your slot at School X before you apply to School Y or you show up on the accepted list that is released at the end of the year.

When applicants are offered interviews at my school, we check the acceptance list from the year before just to be sure. When that person comes for interview, we ask that they show proof that they have given up their previous slot. After May 15th, you may not hold more than one acceptance so you do not want to show up in two places on that list either.

Then do you show up on the 'accepted list' if you did not defer? For this application cycle, I was accepted to a school off a waitlist, but in between when I was put on the waitlist and when I was accepted, I had some significant happenings in my life that prevented me from being able to go to med school this year and I forgot to withdraw off the waitlist (honestly, it didn't even cross my mind because I really didn't think I was going to get in).

I got a call and was offered acceptance over the phone, explained my situation, and declined the acceptance right then. I was told to just apply again the next year.

Will that show up as an acceptance, or is it only acceptances that are 'accepted' or deferred that matter?

First off, your mdapplicants profile doesn't match your picture. (You're certainly female in the picture, but the mdapplicants profile is for a male - what's the deal with that?)

Secondly, please be sure to post whatever AMCAS tells you in response to your question; it will settle a lot regarding this issue!

Thanks!

^ since when did someone's avatar have to be of themselves? i could put a picture of chuck norris as my avatar, but that doesn't mean i'm coming to kick ass...

Cool stuff. Maybe this should be stickied. There seems to be quite a few people who have this question on the forums with some people stating med schools will never know nor would they care to know if you have accepted. I guess this puts that theory to rest.

Not all schools do this. I believe there is a way for schools to find previous acceptances, but it is not obvious and many do not check.
