I am needing a physician's recommendation by Feb in order to apply for post bac program in UNT in order to apply for TCOM. Since I have been away from school for about 10 years, they suggested that I get a LOR from a doctor. I heard about the DO mentor program and went to the site to look for a doctor. It seems like 95% of them prefer mentor program through email only. I really need to build up the shadowing experience along with their LOR within a month and I am not so sure how this mentor program would help me if I only communicate through email. 😕

Can anyone share some experience of using this mentor program? I want to hear some experinces of the program before I start knocking on bunch of doctors.

I found the doctor who wrote my LOR from the mentor site. It also said on his page that he wanted to mentor through email only, but I sent him an email asking if I could shadow him anyway and he agreed. I emailed about 8 different DO's from that website (for all of them it said they wanted to mentor through email) and 1 responded saying that he was willing to meet with me. Just write a respectful email to a few doctors and see what happens. Good luck!

Mentor program worked great for me. Signed up, 2 days later had 3 offers (one from Urologist, one from an FP, one from an Anesthesiologist), spoke with all three via email, decided to shadow the Anes, set up an appointment, drove down, shadowed him in the OR/hospital for about 8 hours, spoke with him about the process, being a DO, etc, for another 1-2 afterward, contacted him a few days later to thank him again and asked for an LOR, he wrote me an LOR, thanked him again, and I hope to keep in touch/see him in the future.
