Do most clinical programs require students to remain in residence during summer?

I've been looking at quite a few programs and am wondering, is it a universal requirement among clinical programs for its grad students to remain in residence over the summer, or is this specific to only some programs?

If you have summer funding, clearly you should be there during the summer. If not, you won't HAVE to be there, but you'd probably want to be there pretty often working on projects, etc.

Most advisors would definitely not look too kindly on you taking off for the summer. It can be a big time to collect data, write papers, etc. Plus, you may continue to see clients over the summer, so you can't go away for too long.

You will spend many hours in the lab in the summer - I actually prefer working in the summer as I can solely focus on my research 🙂
But do take two to three weeks off for your own sanity....

You are locked in. This is just like other grown up things, summer is just another season.

Yeah, I'm fine with it. I was just trying to clarify things.

Our practica begin July 1. Classes end June 10. And we're even expected to be here in the interval because it's a great chance to catch up on research and writing when classes are out and you haven't started seeing clients yet.

I'm not sure if this is how it works at all programs, but at my school there is the opportunity to do a summer externship outside of the home institution. So, it appears that there is a possibility of spending a summer elsewhere if needed.

Other students chose an externship site that is in close proximity of their home institution and sometimes incorporate the externship period into the normal school year.
