hello all,

i plan to apply to osteopathic schools but i do not have a lor from a DO but I have one from an MD. how much will it hurt my application???
anyone been accepted to DO school without a LOR from a DO???

Some schools, like mine, require a DO letter. Others don't. You might do a search as there have been some lists before of which schools do and don't require the DO letter.

You still have plenty of time. Go find a DO to shadow, and then it will not be an issue 😉

I think it is certainly to your benefit to obtain a D.O. recommendation. Personally, I was using a very strong LOR by an MD and had applications out to about 7 schools. These schools all indicated they preferred a DO LOR butt an MD letter could be substituted. When I applied to a school that required a DO letter, I went ahead and included this letter with my following 3 applications. I immediately received interviews at all 3 schools. At that point, I hadn't heard from the other schools where my applications had been in for some time. I followed up and sent the DO LOR to all the schools and received an additional 3 interviews. I guess it is up to you, but I think it looks better to the DO school when you have a DO LOR.

I did not have a LOR from a DO and was accepted at UHS (KCUMB). However, I did have a very strong letter from an MD that I have known all my life and shadowed frequently. But, as was said before, you still have some time so I would try to shadow a DO if you can. GOOD LUCK!!!! 😀

Even if you don't have time to shadow or get to know a DO, simply having that letter will open up the ability to apply to more DO schools that actually require a letter from an actual DO and will not take the MD rec letter in place. You can always add the MD letter to supplement your DO letter expecially if you worked closely to get a good lor from the MD.

LOR mean nothing w/o MCAT. Don't sweat it!
