Can someone highlight what the average comlex scores for DO neurology residencies are? What else are the programs looking for? How important is research for a DO neurology residency?

I would think with only ~15 AOA spots in the country it would be competitive?

There's probably close to 5 times as many MD medical schools as DO schools, and DO's can apply for both MD and DO residencies. Since only DO's can apply to DO residencies, it's not that bad to get in. I didn't look into it too much, but I know some people who went to DO neurology residency who umm, weren't the best applicants 😳/ I wouldn't worry too much. If you want a good program that's not too difficult to get into, check out the Valley Hospital residency in Las Vegas. Dr. Veerappan there is incredibly hard working, smart, and kind. Do a rotation there if you want to go.

I agree with the above comments regarding the Valley Hospital program and Dr. Veerappan!!! I'm a soon-to-be PM&R applicant but did a neurology rotation toward the end of my 3rd year as a bit of prep and I thoroughly enjoyed the clerkship. Dr. Veerappan is a phenomenal clinician and teacher,a nd the clerkship allows a great deal of autonomy for the students. Learned a ton, enjoyed the work more because I felt really involved, and the residents there are sharp and hardworking!

Thank you!
I took the comlex and got a 550, hopefully that will be competitive enough. I do see a lot of DO's matching into MD neuro residencies. My USMLE is below average so that's the only thing I am worried about.

I will definitely do a rotation at Valley.

Okay, seems like a redundant post, but with a score of 550, you will be fine. As somebody else pointed out, as there are only 15 osteopathic programs, there may be tight competition at times, but you have a good chance. I also think you have a good chance at an allopathic program if the DO match doesn't work out for you.

I had a classmate at Garden City and was told it was a pretty solid program. Well known? No, but she felt as if she had a pretty solid education. I went to LECOM and back in my day, Hamot was just starting up a program. I had classmates do the program there and they loved it and they ALL obtained really good fellowship after Hamot, some in really strong programs. Unfortunatley, last I checked, Hamot only took two applicants per year, so again, tight competition.

I would just ask around on the osteopathic forum and see what people think of their respective programs. In my experience, we had quite a few neurology wanna-bes at my medical school, so I am not sure if that was just my school, or an osteopathic thing?
