most schools will acccept either MD or DO. i am not sure if there is a DO school out there that only accepts a DO letter but not an MD. of course getting a DO letter will be better for osteopathic schools, but if your application is strong i am sure it wont matter too much (just as long as you know what the osteopathic profession is all about during your interviews). if you are also applying to MD schools, you might want to shadow and get a letter from an MD also. go ahead and shadow the MD and continue looking for a DO to shadow- that way u have all your bases covered.

Having DO letter would allow you to apply to more schools since some of them require it. As far as the experience is concerned, they don't really care whether you shadow MD or DO.

Take whatever you can get. If you can find both do both. Some DO schools suppossedly require a recommendation from a DO for application...if you can't find one in your area at all..as in a single one then they would probably make an exception..but I'm not the schools so I have no idea.

If you've known an MD for 3 years and a D.O. for 1 hour of shadowing, get the MD's letter. If your question is simply "which one is better" if all else is equal, a DO letter is better.
