About what percentage of students attend the lectures at dental schools? Do they post the lectures for viewing online or anything?

60%-70% attend at nyu.
if we have extra credit or quiz for attendance sake - 95-99% do attend

they do post lecs on blackboard ( online)

listening in class -makes you understand 60% , self-reading after lecture adds another 20 makes it 80% , if you get doubts and get them clarified from faculty after what you understood from class lec+ self reading may make it to 90% , if you can attain 100% i agree that you are a genius...🙂

That high? The other day I accidentally went to class and counted no more than 50 (this was an 8 AM oral bio class).

Personally I learn so much better from get my full night's sleep and listening to the recorded lectures at 1.5-2.0x speed at my leisure, all from the comfort of my apartment. My grades actually went up considerably since I stopped going.

depends on the class and attendance policy. If you don't get anything out of the class and there is no roll sheet, no point in wasting your time.

good for you. but it varies from student to student...and you know why ann's notes is so famous in the school...

It various from course to course and definitely upon the student as well. Some classes are just not worth going to because the professor ESSENTIALLY is reading off the ppt...but others have professors that genuinely lecture and try to get you to really learn the material. But there will always be those students that never come unless there is a quiz or exam or something.

If going to class helped you in undergrad...definitely try going and taking notes. If you get bored...you can always play mind-numbing games on your laptop. 👍

At Maryland I'd say less than half show up to lecture but we have a lecture capturing system so you can go back and watch it later at 2x speed. The only lectures where most of the people show up are the classes that have quizzes.

At UMDNJ, the vast majority of people go to class. Of course we have one or two a semester that are poorly attended if the professor hints that it's ok. Also if there's a big exam coming up attendance definitely drop.

I'm starting to envy some of you all after reading this thread. No lectures here with PBL, but since we work in groups of 8 during "case," attendance is 100% mandatory and a missing group member is pretty obvious. It is a huge hassle to clear absences, and sometimes I feel like I'm in elementary school again having to bring in a note from my mom saying I was sick. On the flip side, case only accounts for 3-4 hours on M, W, F.

Ya, I've got a room for just studying. 2 actually. I've got a dedicated office but my wife is usually working in there so I use a guest bedroom we have that I threw a desk in. Yep, AZ is the land of plenty, lots of big homes for cheap out here.

Don't u guys feel guilty if u miss a class for more than a week then show up someday to ask a single challenging question??

However, there are no essay type exams, so I believe everything is objectively graded, which means u may not need to show up.

Regardless of it, I agree that listening to lecture will surely strengthen my understanding of materials based on my own experience. 🤣

Especially, in the long run~~~for the long term memorization~~~

My current belief is that missing a few of those courses is a short cut to be dropped out of dental school. No?

but the PBL is simply horrible!! (at least to me!!)

yup, without a doubt. You cant miss labs. Cant learn dentistry and get hand skills without going to lab. Also cant miss the associated lectures for those labs.

We have basic science courses with the med students (biochemistry, physiology, pathology) for the most part (we kind of had our own anatomy deal). On top of that, we have classes like dental morphology, pre-clinical operative, dental materials, and radiology that the med students do not take. The attendance for the med school classes are optional for the most part (and many people freely exercise this option) and the attendance for the dental school classes are basically all mandatory.

at Columbia, sometimes before an exam, 10 out of 80 people show up to a lecture.
some courses most of the class shows up though, due to quizzes, attendance etc. it really depends on the course and how it's taught.
also, we have online resources such as podcasts, transcripts, so generally people do fine without going to lectures.

That was exactly what I did. After the first year, I only attended the classes that had a quiz.
