It is something that annoys me, since RPhs are supposed to be professionals, that a**hole, fu*king A, and SOBs are heard on an occasional basis. Sometimes its the technicians but I have noticed most of the older male pharmacists use these colorful "expressions".

I can really understand that technicians may do this, but come on...

Is it said to the patient? Is it used to degrade the patient behind his/her back? If its used rarely in conversation I just don't see it being a big epidemic. Sometimes this PC culture starts getting out of hand.

We work in a pretty laid back environment, but noone swears on a regular basis. I've never heard the F-bomb dropped at work, thats for sure.

I'm thinking you're "older male pharmacists" aren't the norm.

We've always been professional, but my last preceptor (late 20s female) and I would always say "Be right back, I need to Sh**!" and the stories we told in the back were full of colorful language. It was like undergrad again...never in front of patients though. Great times.

Yes - I do & I have....but NEVER to or about patients, prescribers or fellow workers. When I slip into less than appropriate expressions, it is due to a situation or circumstance (the power went out, the order is not coming, the computer is down, etc....) I'm also very careful to never say these things around anyone outside the immediate pharmacy - ie - in a public place or on a nursing unit.

However, if language like you've heard offends you - speak up! Its inappropriate & you have every right to request it not be spoken around you - nicely of course. If you did that with me - I'd apologize for offending you, request that you forgive my past offenses & be sure to never say anything inappropriate when you are around. I'm an adult & I'd do that willingly to make my work environment the best for everyone.

I worked at a very high volume place... techs would swear, pharmacists too. ALL THE TIME. Then, after a while, they started coming after me with displacement of aggression! I was like the guy who tried to do things by the book, and they were too scattered and careless. I hated the place. I was the one of the few who stayed calm under that pressure. Coworkers would just walk out due to the stress! Even start crying after fights with customers. I almost felt like I was working in a psych ward. It made angry customer phone calls into a breath of fresh air, actually!

Great first experience in retail eh? 😀

I worked with a pharmacist who was referred to as Cussing Jim. So yeah.

At my current place there is some swearing, but mostly by techs.

At my more recent prior post there were hella inappropriate conversations all the time (when no patients were around). That store was all young (hottie) female techs with a young gay male pharmacist. Every guy who walked into the store was checked out and discussed. I'd bet that much of that has been curtailed because there is a newer (older, foreign) pharmacy manager on the scene.

At my first pharmacy job there was an old dude that cussed and threw things.

Like any workplace, the saltiness of the environment is going to vary with the people who work their and management's tolerance of such shenanigans.

I have a very foul mouth outside of work. I don't work in a pharmacy, but generally that kind of thing is really frowned upon in the workplace. So I cuss as much as possible on my breaks and then bring the curtain of professionalism down once I step back into the work area.

I think the issue at hand is senstivity to the situation one is in. I don't swear in front of my mother because I know she hates it. I keep my language G-rated (OK, maybe PG) at work and with strangers because someone might be offended by my creative crassness. If I'm with friends though, all bets are off.

I noticed that night shift pharmacist at my hospital swears a lot; I dunno if it has to do with circadian rhythm or what, he complained that his blood pressure was up too.

My boss sweared numerous times during my interview. It was then that I knew I wanted the job.

I swear all the time at work. I'll cuss with some of my better known patients that will swear with me.

Yes, the pharmacists (males and females) and the techs (males and females). They had all been working together at the same store when it was Eckerds, and then stayed together when the store changed to CVS. I think that the newest (besides me) member of the group had been there for about 3 years (I had just started), and everyone else had been there for at least eight years.....so they all felt pretty comfortable with each other. They would cuss, check people out, party together, they would even talk about getting high together outside of work, which I was not comfortable with 😱 .....I would just try to ignore them and do my job while they would waste time (the techs AND the pharmasists) talking about how their weekend went and and what they did last night, etc.

Anyway, a certain floating pharmacist was known for his tempers and foul mouth, not only with the techs but also with the customers. He would actually cuss customers out on the phone, calling them b***h, and a**hole. He would throw things, etc, but CVS did nothing because I guess they are hard up for pharmacists. Everyone was afraid :scared: to work with him, but although he would blow up when frustrated, I prefered to work with him because he did not waste time talking about his sexual conquests and getting high, etc.

I only stayed there five months.
