DO/PhD programs

So today I was filling out my PCOM secondary and noticed they have an option for a DO/PhD program. I had not really considered doing that sort of a program, but now am thinking it may be something I'd be interested in. I have been involved in research for about 2 years with 2 posters and 2 summer internships so I'd imagine that my background would warrant consideration for it. Can anybody speak to the benefits of a program like this? Also, how does residency work after you do that sort of a program? Thanks!

Benefits can include
PhD
Get some stipend
You get to do research (you decide if this is a benefit)
Can open more doors for residency

Residency programs will work the same as a normal student

Cons
More difficult to get accepted into
Don't always get a stipend
Research sucks
Adding 3 years to medical school sucks
