I think it was the 'best looking' school thread that brought up the pronunciation of LECOM. So I was thinking we could get a list of not only school names but of other things you may have heard said a couple of different ways. I imagine there will be some disagreements so we can put both (or more) of the differences on the guide.

LECOM "lee-COM'
osteopathy "aw-stee-op-uh-THee"
osteopathic "aw-stee-oh-path-ick"
Touro "Tour-oh"

haha fair enough. I had no idea about Touro when I first started wandering on SDN though, took a while too. I'm sure the PCOMs, LMUs and Novas are easy enough for most people.

i always called CCOM as CHI-COM and KCUMB as K-Kumb lol

people in philly call pcom p-c-o-m. for everyone else its Pee-COM

How does everyone on here pronounce AACOMAS?

ah-co-mass

or

aye-co-mass?

or something different all together?

I heard a news report pronounce Touro as tour-OH with the emphasis on the second syllable, but I watched an official Touro video on Youtube and they pronounced it with the emphasis on the first syllable.

For AACOMAS, I say "A-A-comas" or "double A comas" although the people who answer the phone number for them call it aye-comas.

a-a-c-o-m-a-s.

Haha just kidding. I pronounce it exactly like the second of your above choices. Let the scrutiny begin!

If you call AACOMAS some of the people will say "Thank you for calling AACOMAS" but they all say it differently, at least in my experience. I don't even try to say it.

For KCUMB I just say K-C-U-M-B 🙂 Same for just all of them except PCOM and LECOM.

I never applied to KCUMB, but whenever I read it here I say to myself K-C-U-M-B. I suppose K-Cumb as someone mentioned above works, just doesn't sound right to me.

Yeah, It's GOT to be K C U M B...way too off the other way. Haha

And Uh-comas is how I says it. Also Azz Com

Around my house, KCOM is K-COM, OUHCOM is Ohio, NSU is No-vah, and SOMA is that stupid school that makes you move after a year.
It's really a great program! The students I've met/talked with are also very helpful and enthusiastic about their curriculum too...

Haha, HalfListic- are you trying to spread your filth in that other thread? 😉

I say A-Z-COM... jealous?

gotta say this thread is giving me some laughs....

btw NYITCOM (no longer nycom) in russian NYEET-COM is NO COM

Fus ro DAH!

MedPR, I did us both a solid and looked it up, because I was equally stumped when I first saw it: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/fus-ro-dah

Im really glad this was mentioned and then looked up. I had no idea what it was either, but after looking it up I found out it was something some warrior yells in Skyrim to summon a dragon (i think) ...and then I found this beauty:

I laughed probably more than I should have

Oh boy, I've been one of those pee-com people hahaha

eh-comas fer me, but when you call them they have a variety? That's crazy!

TCOM is Tea-COM

By the way, coffee preference=automatic rejection.

When I was a pre-med, I always said kay-com. . . but when you get to Kirksville, you learn it's kay-cee-oh-em. I still like my old way better. . . .

i wanna be a dawk-tur and pre-screeb you some mee-dee-seen

i always read it this way too. thanks for the clarification.

The reason it is P-C-O-M and K-C-O-M is that they otherwise sound like websites (ie p.com), at least that was what others that go there told me.

KCUMB Class of 2016

I heard someone say MSU- COM, but most I know call it M-S-U C-O-M and the MD program human med

Hmm... no one has taken a crack at Rocky Vista?? Rocky Vista= Raw Key Vee Staaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Doesn't seem like a valid reason considering there is no "dot" before the COM, but it's all good.

So the majority of the coms in my head are c-o-ms?

Really? Didn't know that, man!..:scared:
Hey AACOMAS, gimme my damn dollars back man, I'm outta this school's league...

I will never say C-O-M...what a waste of energy.

Syllable inflation is getting out of control...

What is the point of this discussion?

While it may seem silly overall (as much of SDN is) it is important that when interviewing at any particular school, you are aware of the way they wish to be called.

Of all the things that one is expected to convey during an interview, or what the interviewer is looking for in you, I highly doubt that the correct pronunciation of an acronym will help or hurt you in being admitted.

This discussion serves no purpose.

personally, I like these kind of threads here and there...balances out the stress of application season and lets us see that pre meds do have a sense of humor.
