DO Pronunciation Guide

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Of all the things that one is expected to convey during an interview, or what the interviewer is looking for in you, I highly doubt that the correct pronunciation of an acronym will help or hurt you in being admitted.

This discussion serves no purpose.

You would be surprised how important it is. While I agree their focus should be on the interviewee, some preparation would be reflected in properly pronouncing the name of the school. Actually when I interviewed at P-C-O-M that was the most common piece of advice given by current students.

H Y F R? How do you say that? H-Y-F-R or Hi-fur? 😕

personally, I like these kind of threads here and there...balances out the stress of application season and lets us see that pre meds do have a sense of humor.

Agree 100%

Great Lebowski quote too. Well done.

The reason it is P-C-O-M and K-C-O-M is that they otherwise sound like websites (ie p.com), at least that was what others that go there told me.

That is dumb--and whoever told you that is equally as dumb.

But seriously, only professors and admins call it P-C-O-M. According to them, you wouldn't say YOU-CLA, would you? (UCLA). So why would you say Pee-COM?

Actually makes a good bit of sense but, at the same time, who gives a damn?

I agree the semantics are silly, but students at their respective schools do call it that, as do faculty/admins/alumni. Remember there are acronyms, and designed to make it easier to say than "Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine" for example. Those that have a vested interest in a school call it by its proper name.

Anyone that is interviewing should give a damn. Nothing like mispronouncing the school name to the faculty.

I shadowed two DO's, one from L-E-C-O-M and one from P-C-O-M and they called it "lee-com" and "p-com."

Guess we'll never know.

Proper name is best.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

One... Two... Threee......... Crunch!

The world may never know!

Spelling out the letters puts an emphasis on each letter, which is important because the "O" in each school name represents a very defining aspect of the school. pronouncing the schools k-com or p-com only puts emphasis on 2 syllables, one of which being "com", which an outsider would assume stands for "college of medicine" rather than "college of osteopathic medicine.

at least, that is my take on it.

Just recently shadowed an EM resident and when I asked her what she enjoyed most about "kay-cum" (I always thought it was a silent "b") she gave me a death stare. The more you know, I guess.

I avoid this problem by simply saying "What do you most enjoy about the school?"

Also this resurrection reminds me how many Pre-Meds we lose once they're in medical school and no longer posting 🙁

I'm going to take a stab and say the reason we call them Peecom etc is because when we first learned about DO schools we notice they all have "COM" in their names so we adjusted accordingly per school from there.

Surprised no one brought up "atsu-soma". Whenever I'd say that name someone would say "bless you".
