DO Radiology?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
as a DO matching into an MD program generally has been next to impossible, but who knows where radiology competitiveness will be when you graduate med school, so it could be easy. But as it stands right now, a DO going to an MD program is pretty low, a DO matching into a DO program is probably equal in difficulty to an MD matching into an MD program.

+1. sounds about right. i would add that there seems to be a bit less emphasis on board scores at DO programs compared to MD programs, but you still have to be sharp nonetheless.

I disagree. Radiology has decreased in competitiveness and more DOs are matching each year. I think it will be like anesthesia soon enough.

This is what I thought as well, based on recent match lists.

FrkyBgStok where are you getting this info?

and you might be right. I have not been interested in radiology so I have not watched radiology at all and DOs going into MD residencies. I have heard it was getting less competitive but wasn't sure how quickly that was approaching. so.....sure. i agree.

but based on rads 5 years ago it was pretty competitive. it has recently been getting less competitive. and not sure what you mean about "getting info." I didn't provide any sort of statistics I should need to back up.

Your joking right? I think my school had at least 8-10 or so acgme rads matches from talking to people in my class.

I think if you want it you can probably get it. The DO I shadowed (KCUMB grad) was a radiologist and went to a MD residency (Mizzou).

The more established DO schools seem to have quite a few matches into rads a year.

http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2011.pdf

On page 49, in the "score unknown column", which is almost solely DO applicants, 63/83 matched. There is of course some self selection bias, but a 75% match rate is nothing to sneeze at.

But as a US MD, it appears that as long as you score 201+ on step 1 your chances of matching are 80%+

I was just wondering if you heard this from current/past medical students, current DO radiologists etc. etc.

Well here's to hoping! I really would like to go the DO route, but I am thinking that MD may open up more rads options. If it only it wasn't for my abysmal GPA!

Maybe my rads publications will help for snagging a radiology residency! Who knows. I am going to try to focus on med school first, but can't help daydreaming about imaging 😛 haha

I second (or third) the notion that radiology has become much more DO friendly over the years, speaking from the perception of the ACGME. OP: check out the most recent match lists (there's a thread about this year's match), and you will see that a fair number of schools had more ACGME matches for radiology than AOA ones. For example, CCOM (2012) matched 4/6 into MD rads, one of which was at CCF; OUCOM (2012) matched 2/3 into MD rads.

If you can pull average to above-average scores and garner some research, you should be okay getting an ACGME match.

😡 this is like the 5th DO [insert specialty] thread this week. The answer is simply yes. The opportunities are there, you just have to be motivated enough to seek them out.

Agreed...it seems like the pre-osteo forum is regressing lol

Hi All. Just thought I would share some of my expereinces with you as a d.o. that has just matched into an md radiology spot. Don't know why I'm on the pre-med forum...must be that post-match bliss...ha.

There were 86 unfilled md spots this year compared to the 40 some spots last year...most there has ever been in a while, and while I can't predict how competitive it will be four years down the road, right now at least...the competitiveness is much less. There just seems to be less applicants going into radiology. However, this is not to say that anyone that wants to do rads will be able to match. I do feel like most radiology programs still want top tier candidates and it is a challenge to acquire allo interviews being a d.o. But just cause it is a challenge doesn't mean it is impossible. My advice is to take the USMLE, do well on it, and show them that you are on equal playing ground as your md counterparts. I attend DMU and I can say that this year out of the 5 people in our class (maybe more) that I knew doing rads 4/5 matched md. Last year in 2011, 6/6 matched md (5 of those being university programs too). From some of my friends at CCOM, I have heard similar things from both this year and year before...in general just many more d.o.'s matching md rads. Most of the d.o's I met on the md interview trail this year had 8+ md interviews...which I think is more than normal and all the d.o.'s I know (not kidding) got their first or second choice in rads this year. I feel very fortunate that it was a less competitive year, but like I said before, the name of the game is to get interviews...and in order to accomplish that you will need a good USMLE score, rank...etc etc. MD programs will have a hard time denying you if have good scores, good rank, are personable and have a passion for radiology.

It seems like Rads is becoming the new Gas. The job market has tightened and so has the desire of many students to go that route.

The job marked has tightened for both gas and rads?

there's some sentiment expressed here from rads attendings:

gas is an open secret. midlevels-CRNA, AA, PA,NP have all taken a cut out of the Physician Niche.

Both specialties seem to be in transition, as basically procedural/examination specialties, the affordable care act will have a major affect on their futures.

As crazy as it sounds the "safest" specialty these days is FM/IM/Peds---anything primary care--can even add EM.

If I was interested in Gas or Rads, I'd totally be happy making 250K in either. With looming cuts, I don't see why it's so hard for current pre-meds to accept that the big dollar signs associated with these two specialties is drying up to more realistic levels.

Am I the only one that thinks this?!

Going by recent match lists that I've been looking at, I thought it was becoming pretty reasonable for a DO to have a good shot at ACGME Diagnostic Radiology these days?

You're thinking is correct. The field has become much more DO friendly, just like anesthesiology.
