I just checked a bunch of websites for osteopathic schools, and most of them require a letter of recommendation from an osteopathic physician. This is a major obstacle for me, because I don't know any DO's and the phone book lists only 2 in my area. I guess I'll try to call those 2, but what if they're too busy to talk to me? Is this a very strict requirement, or can it be remedied? Anybody else experience this problem? Thanks.

Most schools say that they would prefer a letter from an MD who really knows you than a letter from a DO who just met you. The DO letter rule is not, generally, very strict.

However, you will be surprised when you call the DO's. They are always excited to talk to kids thinking about following their footsteps. Just call and ask if you can shadow them. Get to know them a little and express your interest in osteopathy and they will almost always volunteer to write a letter for you.

Good luck!

There are tons of threads about DO LORs, so I recommend that you do a search (use the advanced search function, though).

You can always call your state's Osteopathic society/association and get a list of DOs in the area.
