I'm trying to develop a list of DO schools and was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions? Stats: MCAT 31, sGPA: 3.29, cGPA: 3.24 (strong upward trend). I'm from CA and have 1 LOR from a DO. Shadowing and volunteer experience, currently working as an ED scribe (600+ hours). Prefer to be near a big city.

Current List:
PCOM
CCOM
KCU
TCOM
NSU

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated it.

Not sure if you will survive the cutoff for the secondary invitation for KCU. From what I have seen in the past year they've been very picky with having a minimum sGPA and cGPA of 3.25. I would def call admissions there and see if having the high MCAT and/or the strong upward trend may get you past it. They will give you a straight forward answer.

I'd also add RowanSOM to that list. @mathnerd88 may have more information in regards to this school.

Definitely add the California DO schools (Touro-CA and WesternU). They seem to prefer high MCAT/lower GPA students.

Rowan would be fine, but know they prefer in-state applicants, and tuition for OOS is $60kish. You also need to add more "safeties" to your list. Beggars can't be choosers. All the big city schools generally take higher stat applicants, but it won't hurt to apply to them. You'll need to apply early for the best possible shot.

So I recommend taking out tcom it's hard to get in OOS. As far as schools go I would consider:

DMU (des Moines is a decent sized city)
Western (LA not to far)
Touro ( in NYC) Touro CA ( hour or so out from San fran)
PCOM GA (not to far from Atlanta)
Nycom (suburbs of new York)

Throw in atsu Soma and Touro Nevada I would say to be safer on getting in somewhere.

MCAT 31, sGPA: 3.29, cGPA: 3.24 (strong upward trend)

Your GPA is on the lower end, but certainly competitive enough to be considered at a number of places. And because of that 31 MCAT, you can pretty much justify applying to any DO as long as you have the funding. Certainly schools like Western Touro will be a tough reach, but I have a hard time saying that you won't have a shot there.

Here's something I dug up and literally copied and pasted below:

My stats are very similar to yours, though it seems like I had a lot more healthcare experience (10,000 hours+). I applied to all of the schools on your original list besides TCOM and got no love. I'd say you should definitely expand your list - at first I was hesitant to spend so much $$$ since I thought my 31 was going to balance out my low GPA, but clearly schools weren't as impressed as I naively thought they might be. Now sitting on 3 acceptances to solid DO programs, I'm 1000000% happy to have applied broadly - it's a common recommendation on these boards for a reason.

Agreed with @CLAF211 . The only "top-tier schools" from the OP's list I got into were RowanSOM and CCOM, and my GPA is 3.7 and MCAT is 31. I didn't apply to KCU nor TCOM, but I didn't get any II from PCOM or NSU.

Don't think just because you have a higher than average MCAT that you'll definitely get in OP. In fact, CCOM probably has average MCAT of above 30 and average GPA past 3.6 for this cycle. Add more "safeties" to that list.

Thank you everyone for your insight! It is greatly appreciated.

@CLAF211 congratulations on your acceptances! Do you mind sharing what schools they are at?

@mathnerd88 I'm realizing now that my GPA is below average for pretty much all the schools... which ones would you consider to be "safeties"? I'm thinking of adding LECOM-E, WesternU, AZCOM, DMU, maybe Touro-NV...

Well none of the more established schools are really safeties. That includes DMU, CCOM, PCOM, MSUCOM, etc. I would say safety schools would be schools that are new (probably opened in the past ten years.) Schools like ACOM, BCOM, CUSOM, NYIT-AR, LUCOM are probably easier to get into. Some of the other ones are regionally biased. I would also add on the schools you mentioned, like LECOM, Western-U, Touro (they love high MCAT like yours) etc.

I would apply as broadly as possible in your situation. You should try tackling at least 15 or so DO schools in your application. Out of the nine DO schools or so I actually submitted secondaries for, I only received 6 interview invites.

I interviewed at 3 schools and was accepted to all 3: MU-COM, ACOM, and Touro NY. I was very, very impressed by the first 2, which have very established rotations despite their newer school status. I think that in time they'll both become extremely well-regarded schools.

Here is my revised list:

PCOM
CCOM
KCU
NSU
DMU
RowanSOM
AZCOM
WesternU
Touro-NV
MU-COM
LECOM-E
ACOM
AT-SOMA

Curious to see what @Goro thinks?

so does it go cGPA/cGPA/MCAT or sGPA/cGPA/MCAT ???
