Do schools actually consider the core competencies when analyzing applicants?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Multiple schools had me write secondaries on these, so I’d say yes.

I see. Can a core competency such as " living systems" be covered through upper div bio classes?

Came across this interesting article:

Do schools really take these core competencies into consideration when choosing applicants? Might this explain why many applicants with insane stats but bland ec's wind up empty handed?
Ummm, yes.

Why do you think we ask you for ECs and not merely choose people on stats alone????????

As you're aware, the humanistic domains are 5/6 of what we want.

If they didn't, why would they waste so much time and effort to replace the old checklist system and on asking you to write essays on them? Everything that they do is done for a reason.

Yes. That's the easy part. Some of the softer competencies come through in your non-clinical volunteering, engagement with communities different than your own, teamwork, etc. That's why we place a high value on some ECs.

Got it, thanks for your advice

I know MSU-CHM does, they said each application has someone review it, then it gets a score. Applications with a certain score get interviews, at your interview you get scored and then those get added together and aid in admissions decisions.
