Do schools base their admission decision on where you've been accepted?

Hey guys,

Just something I have been thinking about recently. Since all schools you have applied to will know where you have been accepted in February and some schools don't release their admission decisions until later on, is your admission decision for those schools somewhat based on what acceptances you are holding?

I believe only schools that have actually accepted you will see where else you were accepted in February. It isn’t until later in the cycle when all schools will see where you have been accepted. That said, I do wonder if this plays a factor at that point.

We cannot see where you are holding until we tender a decision.

From this thread: Schools seeing other acceptances

Also, look up goro and gyngyn's various posts on 'poaching' on here, they're very insightful. Although that usually refers to being accepted off the waitlist while you hold other acceptances, but I think it relates to what you're asking.

@gonnif Can the schools you've been accepted at see schools you've been accepted at, but withdrawn from after Feb 1st?

I asked this question in the other thread, and the answer was no. The schools will only see your current acceptances.

--February 1st : Multiple Acceptance Report is released. Only Schools that have accepted you can see where else you have been offered acceptance. No school can ever see where else you have applied, been rejected, or been waitlisted.

--April 1st: National Acceptance Report is released. Any school can now see where you have been accepted. At no time can any school ever see where else you have applied, have been rejected or have been waitlisted

This might be a stupid question: Can schools accept all of their applicants on February 1st without informing them to see who has multiple acceptances or not?? Or would schools ever do such a thing??

They are required to notify acceptees within a few days. And if say they accept 600 and 300 say yes but they only had 150 seats, the school would soon be getting an LCME colonscopy without a lube

So schools will never do such a thing. Can they just withdraw the extra acceptances? Assuming if applicants had no idea they got accepted to begin with?

No, school needs to offer an acceptance, notify the applicant and then the applicant can take it or not. Indeed, the applicant can take the offer and hold it until April 30th. Stop feeding into the premed neurosis
I am not! These are really questions I had in mind. Thanks @gonnif 🙂
