Do schools see your MCAT score even if you did not apply to them?

I just got a letter today from Washington St. Louis saying because of my high MCAT score they are sending me this letter and telling me I should apply to their school. Do you think that this is something that every person gets or is this just because of my score? Also, how do they know my score since I didn't apply to them and AMCAS has not released the applications?

I have no answer to your question, but that's pretty awesome

These letters are pretty common, not to dampen your achievement. Somehow, schools can send these letters to people that score above a certain number (though I don't think they know your score exactly until you release it to them).

So, my speculation is that they can send an instruction like: give everyone who got a 35 or higher this form letter. Then you get the letter. If you release your score to them, via primary, then they can see that todipotent had a 45T, or whatever it is.

People with more adcom/AMCAS familiarity might be able to shed more light on the subject.

I don't know what recruiters think is accomplished with those emails. I usually skim then delete.

Some of them (like the military ones) offer huge scholarships that would be very attractive to people who don't have the financial means to fund their education and don't want to be paying off debt for a significant portion of their adult lives. Of course, there's a trade off.

"Just a reminder: Washington Unviersity exists! And we have a medical school!"

I suppose even if they get a positive response one time in a hundred, the ink is payed for.

Good point. I suppose many people wouldn't know about those programs unless someone made it a point to tell them.

Doesn't at all, I just figured it was a blind mailing, but I was thinking that it would be a waste for WashU to send letters to people with 22s when their average score is a 37ish.

But it's not really a waste. If they give automatic secondaries (which I don't know) then they will make all the money off of the 22's who applied because of a 47 cent letter.
By the way I received a couple of these letters too, and was super excited until I thought about it a little...

With hundreds of millions of dollars in grants and tuition, even if they send it to everybody who takes the MCAT (~30,000, no idea and I am too lazy to look it up), it costs ~$30,000 (cost of printing, sending, etc). No big deal. And besides, they probably get enough people who apply on dreams (with no chance of getting in--do they even read these people's?) to more than pay for it anyway.

Oops..I forgot to say they do give automatic secondaries.

I think there was a box on the MCAT registration form about releasing our scores to recruiters...?

Yes there is a part of registration that says you allow your score to be accessed for recruitment/scholarships.

Washington, eh? The only one's I've gotten have been from med schools in the Caribbean. This may bode poorly for me...

this usually go for people who just recently received their scores. so if you got a 54 last year and are wondering why you ain't gettin love, well... whatever, they'll send you something along the way.

i think WashU or Harvard also sends something by mail too. don't get excited.

I got one of those letters the second I was born. Step it up, guys.

The answer is yes.
The same thing happened to me about an year ago when I got 40 on my MCAT. You know, WashU is the number *****...
