DO schools with less class time

Anyone out there who knows of an osteopathic school that doesn't require you to go to class for 30 - 40 hours a week during the first two years? It seems that allopathic schools have much less class time. Why is this? Are there any DO schools with a little less class time? I think I do better studying on my own, so I don't know that all that class time would be useful for me.

I think allopathic schools cut down on anatomy while for DO schools, anatomy is very important. Also DO school need time for OMM which is extra compared to allopathic schools. When I interviewed at COMP, they seemed to have less time in class than CCOM although I'm not sure.

Some schools don't make you goto class so you can still study on your own. Some schools I beleive make attendance mandatory although I don't know which ones.

You don't have to go to class if you don't want to. If you can learn better by yourself, then more power to you. I think the question shouldn't be less class time, but mandatory attendance.

Ditto. And most schools put lectures on MP3 and also offer a scribe service.

But there is no way out of "putting the work in".

You should check out LECOM which has 3 different learning tracks. One of them is for the Independent student...

Here at UNECOM we have a total of 7 hours of required class per week... the other 25-33 hours are optional, and plenty of people skip them.

However, if you come here and sit in the back row of the MS2 room, you can see the ocean when you're bored!

Here at LECOM-B, once anatomy is over in 2 weeks, we'll only have to be in class for 5 hours per week (plus 6 hrs/wk for PBL group meetings). Not that bad compared to some schools.

I was accepted into LECOM-FL but decided not to attend. I think you guys will be hurtin come clinical time, both in terms of finding good clinical spots and the treatment you get down there (I've read on SDN that DO's get treated like **** in that part of FL).

True but the sites are fairly spread out. And don't get too spoiled by the FL weather b/c the weather up by those sites are polar opposites (no pun intended).

LECOM has sites all over the country...we even have a few students arranging their rotations in Hawaii!

DMU has only our OMM and Ethics classes as mandatory. If you decide to go to class, which is optional, it only runs from 8-noon M-F, then a lab once or twice a week for two hours. So on average, 20-25 hours per week. IF you treat medical schhol like a 8-5 job, which a lot of my class mates do, then you pretty much get done studying by 5. Me, I like to take naps in the afternoon. 😉

Hahahaha, I laugh every time I hear this!!! Still hilarious! How about you take (and pass) a couple anatomy tests here at LECOM before you start talking on some **** you know nothing about.

That is not true... it is not easy to get in to LECOM. I did not even get anything from them since I sent out my supplem. appl. in Aug. NO interview NO refusal NO letter... just confirmed that my file was complete. Oh well.. UNECOM was the crazy school that did accept me right away.

My boyfriend attends UC San Diego and the first two years, they had class almost every day from 8-5. In one quarter, they even had class on Saturdays.

UC San Diego has a lot of class time compared to most DO schools I've seen. Not all allopathic schools have less class time, that is not to say that all students go to class.
