They are the legal equivalent to MDs in the United States. That is your answer.

no i am not, i am asking so i can tell my husband about it. i had never heard of do schools till i saw them posted here. I use to only know about md schools. People have said that he should consider applying there because of his age. He will be like 35-36 when he applies. I was just curious. Trying to gather all info and facts so he can decide before making this major life desicion. Please understand

So then what is the difference. Why are they in some peoples opinions easier to get into the Medical schools?

A good website to go to is http://www.aacom.org/
The site is thorough and will answer all your questions.

They are easier to get into than MD schools. The average MCAT for acceptance is about a 25 and the average gpa is a 3.4.

The only reason they are easier to get into is that people don't know about them. Less competition for slots has made admissions stats lower. Tons of Military docs are DOs. In fact the Surgeon General of the Army was a DO at one time. But do a search because people love to debate the difference ad nauseum.

In that case, for his purposes, they're exactly the same. He should apply to them, especially since he's nontrad.

DO schools are a great option for the "older" people out there, especially because the average age at DO schools is slightly higher (so an older person won't feel too out of place). For someone pursuing a medical career as a second career, a DO school is an excellent choice, especially since most of us career changers didn't have the "must-have-a-high-GPA" mentality when in college and instead opted to study for a career and have a life.

I'll be 35 next year when I start DO school and I can hardly wait.

Review the websites that have been posted here. They're full of good information. Also visit the pre-osteopathic and osteopathic forums. Understand that although the degree is criticized often in these forums, out in the real world a DO is the same as an MD. Although you find DO's more often in primary care, as a DO you can specialize in any field you desire, you work in the same hospitals and clinics as MD's and get paid the same salary.
