How rigorous do DOs evaluate applicants that evaluate them? Do certain applicants get rejected outright and told - "No, I'm not going to write you a letter, first because I don't know you too well, and second, because I've got nothing to gain from this." If all that you do is sit there and watch, how are DOs and MDs going to evaluate you after a long and stressful day? 😱

Relax, physicians are humans too...you will find many of them to be kind, caring people. Just ask one if you can shadow and come up with some questions to ask, it shows that you are interested. Try observing them for a full day, then ask if you can continue to watch them/ help out again, give them a copy of your personal statment. Remember that many of them were in the same boat you are now and understand how hard it can be. 😀

I haved shadowed with 3 MDs and 2 DOs. It was easy and once you know one you can get recommended to another (get a phone number, etc). Once you tell the doc that so and so recommended you your in. I found that all three M.D.s were polite and spoke with me AFTER each patient visit, BUT both D.O.s spoke with me during the visits and explained everything. They had me palpate (sp?) and really were more like teachers. It may be a result of the difference in M.D. D.O. training that makes them that way I don't know. Maybe it just depends on the doctors. At any rate the experiences were great and you'll be able to pick your letter writers.

PS-just open up that phone book and find a D.O. leave a message that you'd like to shadow with them. Maybe within a week you'll get a call back.
