URM are for the large minorities in this country, blacks, mexican-americans, native americans, These minorities make up the largest part of the population in the us, 24-27% yet in the field of medicine and other professional fields they represented by a much lower percentage and for this reason they are given preferential treatment. There are also stats that show that blacks and hispanics are more likely to go to a black, hispanic doc and these docs are more likely to serve people of their own ethnicity and race.
