Asians are not considered as minorities in educational system even though there are far fewer than African Americans or Hispanics in the general population of US. The proportion of Asians going to college and medical school is far higher than any non-Caucasians in the US. So Asians are not considered as URM.

Stop by any hospital, most of the doctors that are not white are Indian. All of the cardiologists at my hospital are Indian except for one white guy.

I had a similar question, I am burmese, i assume that most people rarely hear of this country. Do you think med schools would just categorize me with other southeast asian countries? My parents told me to always indicate that I am Burmese because I will have a better chance of gettin in. Any thoughts on it?

URM are for the large minorities in this country, blacks, mexican-americans, native americans, These minorities make up the largest part of the population in the us, 24-27% yet in the field of medicine and other professional fields they represented by a much lower percentage and for this reason they are given preferential treatment. There are also stats that show that blacks and hispanics are more likely to go to a black, hispanic doc and these docs are more likely to serve people of their own ethnicity and race.

What about pacific Islanders (Filipinos). I don't know of that many Filipino doctors out there. I do know that the nursing profession is full of them, but not the physicians. I'm asking seriously, now. No making poop out of my post 😛

Interestingly, there are quite a few medical schools with non-Indo matriculants. I pulled these stats from the MSAR.

South Alabama, Drew, Hawaii, Duluth, North Dakota, New Mexico, Brown, South Dakota, Utah, and the Puerto Rico schools

Chances are, Indians haven't yet extended their influence in these areas lol! But is it possible that a couple of these schools purposefully didn't accept Indian students?? Maybe hidden racism?
