A "stoner" is also pretty subjective... I am no where as big a "stoner" as I was at the beginning of college, but I still do it on occasion. The bottleneck for stoners is not getting into med school, It is during residency and beyond. You could smoke the first 2 years of med school and be fine, but you better stop once you get into the clinical aspect of your education.

If you can not stop, then you have a problem or your priorities are completely backwards. Weed is cool and all, but it gets old after awhile. I would much rather be cutting someone open than rolling up a fat doobie any day of the week.

If you mean people who smoke pot on a daily basis (or at least did before and during med school), I do know a few examples. I suspect use decreased if not ceased once we hit clinical rotations and residency. Once a resident and practicing under your license, I would caution against it. Marijuana is still a DEA Schedule I drug, and if you were involved in a medical error (even if innocent), the presence of THC on a drug screen could mean the end of your career.

How would you ever get accepted without clinical experience?

Don't all clinical experiences drug test you?

Yes, and they usually get dismissed for poor academic performance.
This is what adcoms actually believe

While you could do a random hair test and I'd come up clean because I won't touch the stuff, I've known of people that not only survived but thrived in preclinical despite certain habits. Some people go full Sagan on Satan's spinach.

What about drug tests though?
Most schools don't test you til 3rd year...believe it or not.

I know a lot of people who smoked in college, but once you get to Med school it's reaaaaaaaally not advisable. Both because you could get kicked out and because it's very much not conducive to studying.

Remember that pot builds up in your system, and isn't actually cleared when you're done being high. It's measurable neurological effects can last weeks after you stop smoking (if you are a heavy smoker).

This means a routine pot smoker is going to be consistently limited in their ability to cram as many useless facts as possible for the upcoming exam. This could keep you out of AOA, then you won't match ortho, and everyone will think you're a loser😱

He most certainly would not highly approve

I've had multiple clinical experiences, never was drug tested. I did temporarily quit in advance of applying to each job though in case I did get tested. I ended up getting my medical card so I could worry a bit less (even though it's not actually any kind of legal protection). I've got a pretty severe case of Crohn's disease and an anxiety disorder that medical marijuana has really helped control. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in place of marijuana to manage it once I get to my clinical rotations in med school, but for now it has not been an issue.

It's really frustrating to me that marijuana users face these issues when alcohol is objectively the worse drug and has none of the medical benefits that marijuana has. But that's a rant for another thread.

I couldn't agree with you more! In Seattle people can walk down the street smoking a J and cops wouldn't care to look twice. Unless there are kids around or you're causing problems of course.

Well the other question is: "If we could test for any alcohol use in the last 30 days, would we?"

Are you kidding me? I quit for nothing!

I have classmates who are high all the time and at the top of the class. I also have high achieving classmates who do harder drugs.

I know attendings who get high. I know attendings who do harder drugs when they aren't working.

I'm not condoning it, but it is done

Lol where do you go to school I wanna go there

It's almost as if the entire western world has been brainwashed for years by politicians that were lobbied by the alcohol and tobacco industry to portray marijuana as dangerous and evil.

I'd much rather my doctor were going home and smoking marijuana every night before bed than going home and drinking half a liter of scotch every night before bed, but that's just me.

I don't personally do either, though.
