hey i am an internaiotnal student hoping to go into DO schoo and match to anestehsia. I dont care about program prestige, i am more than happy to apply to community programs, but i was told one thing that i was not sure is true:

"Many programs have GME funding restrictions or institutional policies that don’t sponsor J-1s, especially smaller or community programs (which are often more DO-friendly)."

does anyone know if this is true ?
Thanks

Yes. On average, larger programs are more likely to sponsor J-1’s than community programs.

This is probably disheartening to hear but when you think about it, it doesn’t really change the parts of the journey within your control. No matter what you were going to go in guns blazing to make yourself the best applicant possible, right?

well this probably means that anesthesia is locked out for me so it completley changes the pathway i take

Hardly. Yes it’s a little tougher. But head over to the match thread for 2025. There’s university anesthesia matches on every match list. Plus the best part about a field like anesthesia is it’s mostly about scores and letters. No reason to build a complex CV a mile long with pubs specifically in the field. And the goal of med school is to get those big scores and great letters no matter which path you choose. So really the only thing you do differently going for anesthesia vs any other field is getting one single anesthesia rec letter. Go to conferences, network. Be geographically flexible. Apply to a backup but don’t give up before you start.

Edit: we’re not talking only top programs here. Lots of low tier university programs sponsor.
