I know some people will make fun of this post because Texas offers some of the most reasonable tuition rates in the country? I wanted to know if they offer any scholarships similar to when applying for undergrad?

Also, are there ways to decrease the COA from the published rate? For example, having a roommate will save some money as will buying used books and eating at home but are there any other ways of saving some money over the four years?

As far as I know, most if not all schools offer financial aid as well as scholarships that's including Texas schools. In most cases financial aid is awarded based on the cost of attendance stated by the school you're attending. In regards to decreasing expense, it will just be a matter of budgeting and being frugal within reason.
In addition to having a roomate, Another tip I could give is to live closer to campus (walking distance) as this will save you parking fees and gas money.

What do they base the scholarships on? Is it based on applications or performance during dental school?
Both. I know someone at UTSD that got $10,000 upon acceptance. Another student got a full ride the first month into school, about 20 other students got scholarships at the end of the first semester ranging from $1000-$10,000. I got one based on financial need and grades after my first semester.

Wow. UTSD offers a ton of scholarships. Was the full ride through the school and academics based?

So you're saying that some students get it before they start and there's more opportunities during dental school depending on how hard you work?

Definitely, you can always earn scholarships throughout dental school, all the way up until you graduate. I believe some residents get scholarships as well? I don't remember.
UTSD is a school with much pride in what we do and have a wonderful alumni association that works hard to donate and help the future dentists that UTSD puts out.
