How hard is it to go into pathology or internal medicine as a DO?

I'm considering the DO route. I'm open to either DO or MD, but think I'm more likely to get into a DO school, plus there is a DO school I am in love with.

Just asking.

You should no problem getting into IM. All of the primary care fields are pretty easy to get into. 3 students from TCOM matched pathology (all MD residencies) last year, so I don't think it's that difficult but I'm not as familiar with pathology as I am with IM.

they are on the low end of the competative spectrum....you should have no problems as long as you pass your boards and have no major deficiencies on your transcript

Easy if you get good grades in med school.
Grads have matched into IM at Top Ten schools too.

Yeah, the pathology residents I mentioned earlier - 1 is at Cleveland Clinic and 2 are at Baylor, so you can get into great residencies.

The head of the IM department at John's Hopkins is a graduate from TCOM. This info came from the mouths of the admissions committee at TCOM when I went for an interview.

my mentor is a DO Pathologist, chief resident this year. then she's headed to a fellowship in forensic pathology. she says being a DO helped her in path (OMM, etc.) 👍

Yeah, I know his sister. We went to undergrad together. She told me he graduated second in his class at TCOM.

You can have any residency you want as long as you work for it. Nobody is going to hand over anything competitive to anyone whether Do or MD.
