I am a freshman in college and recently walked on to the division 1 rowing team at my college. It is a 3 season sport with practices 6 days a week, so it is a huge commitment. I am an Interdisciplinary Health Services major in the honors program at school and am interested in going to school to become a DO. I know that shadowing and internships are a good idea to help my application, but I really don't have the time to be doing them during the school year. Are there any suggestions for things to do over the summer, or will rowing hurt my chances of being accepted to school?

I think rowing will help. It shows that you can work hard and be committed. Plus it is a bit nontraditional, so it makes you interesting. As long as you can keep up your grades, I say go for it. However, as you noted, you won't have time for ec's during the year. So I would suggest some shadowing etc during breaks.

you need some medical experience. it's more of a necessity, not a boost to your app. start looking in march to see if hospitals nearby have a volunteer program over the summer. they will usually have an orientation in the spring and then you can volunteer as little or as much as you want over the summer or any time. usually a minimum of a few hours a week
