For those who applied to both DO and MD schools, how different are the interview styles? i.e. the questions, formats, culture, etc.

Oh btw, did y'all think this was another one of those "which is better" program threads? 😛

My experience: I applied to both. Interview was a lot more lengthy for the DO schools in my opinion, but the questions were pretty fair, not too hard. I felt MD had easier questions overall, but they called me out on the red flags on my app (why'd you get this grade in this class, etc), something the DO schools never did. I felt the MD schools asked more about me while the DO schools asked more about my opinion on issues and the impact I would make as a doctor. It seemed the DO school was finding round-about ways to gauge my character, while MD asked me straight up.

The MD interviews were more relaxed in my opinion, whereas DO was a lot more edgy/kept me on my toes.

Also I had MMI for DO which I was completely unprepared for

I was asked about the history of osteopathic medicine so know who A.T. Still was

Check out the Interview Feedback forum of SDN. This will tell you what interview styles and questions are like. These will vary from med school to med school, not merely DO vs MD.

Minimum for DO interview...Know why DO? Know who AT Still is (founder of OM at bare min). If you have ever witnessed OMT done on patient share it! Really share/explain experiences that make you personal and well rounded. Most other things will be typical questions with a few ethics like always. GL

The variation between schools is larger then the variation between MD/DO . That being said I had a pretty softball interview with some thoughtful questions about my app at a DO school and more conversational style interviews in the MD 1 on 1 . The MD schools do tend to have MMI as a component I am not sure if do schools are really into MMIs yet.

Mine were exactly the same. The only difference was I had the typical "Why DO?" question. There are no "Why MD?" lol Other than that one question there was no difference from my experience. Out of all the schools I interviewed, BCOM (new DO) was the toughest 😱

I know WesternU uses MMI but it's not the norm!

I think the why DO and OMM questions are the usual questions that I saw at my DO interviews.

One thing I think would sometimes be emphasized is questions surrounding the 2020 merger-- this might be brought up at some DO interviews but it was never/seldom brought up in my MD interviews.

MUCOM also uses MMI, I believe.

This was the most difficult part of the interview, but seriously spinning OMM as a positive while keeping a straight face is one of the most difficult tasks during the interview.
Ha
I wonder if these D.O schools also do yield protection?
I mean if a 3.8, 525 mcat applies they probably grill that person like crazy.

Actually, in the lower tier DO schools (primarily the newer ones) they will reject people post-secondary with more than average stats (3.8 GPA with 510 plus MCAT) just because they know that that student will not be going there after another school accepts them. DO schools tend to be much more forgiving as far as stats are concerned on the notion that this population has a better chance of taking an acceptance if offered.

Is there a d.o school ranking list somewhere? I want to know what is considered the best d.o school.

Nothing official though some schools are considered better than others. The "top" DO schools would be the older schools with well established affiliate hospitals and research facilities such as KCU, PCOM, Nova, CCOM and such. If you ask 10 people to "rank" the top 10 schools, you'll get 11 different answers. There is some bias put into it. The "lower tier" DO schools would mostly be the newer schools which haven't yet proved themselves as being able to produce good physicians (although they probably would) such as ACOM or BCOM (4th year and 2nd year this upcoming year respectively).

Oh okay
Also the whole com thing is annoying.. Is it just me everyone? Lol

Yeah that probably doesn't apply for M.D
It is all about research that way I guess lol.

Oh wow this thread blew up. Thank you for all your responses, I sincerely appreciate. While I do understand that the whole DO vs. MD interview styles are more complex than just a simple "yes" ,"no" I was really trying to gauge the environment of DO interviews. I will dig around with all the provided feedback.

Happy New Years!
