DO vs. Meharry

I have been accepted to a few prestigious DO Schools (CCOM, AZCOM,...) and now I have an invitation for an interview at Meharry,TN. I would like to do ortho. surgery. Which way to go?

Go to the interview and then see what you think. I have heard that the students at that school are very satisfied with their education and that the profs are friendly. When was your file complete, and when did you get your interview invite? I've heard that Meharry is very slow and interviews pretty late in the spring. True?

I am in the same quandry. Meharry's facilities and early clinical exposure pale in comparision to UNECOM, but i think you would have a more difficult time getting an allopathic orthopedic residency as a DO. An advisor of mine, the chief of surgery in a local major hospital stated that in his 15 years, he had yet to meet a single DO surgeon, but had seen them in every other field.

Keep in mind that getting an allopathic orthopedic residency from any medical school is challenging as the spots are few, but demand is high.

I'm from New York and I've seen many DO surgeons (specifically, Orthopedic Surgeons and Hand Surgery Specialists). I guess it depends on where you live. DO surgeons are prominent or becoming prominent in large city areas.

I'm from a small town in southwest Missouri (but a "medical arena stronghold"). There are many orthopedic surgeons that are DOs. As far as the letters behind your name in my part of the country, they don't matter much. Good luck with your decision!

The chief resident of Neurosurgery here at UC Davis is a DO. There have been DOs through the Orthopaedic Surgery and General Surgery departments.

I'm not really familiar with the DO schools, but Meharry does not have a good reputation. In fact, I would argue that the stereotypes about Meharry students are worse than those about DOs. Ultimately, you will be judged by your clinical grades, USMLE scores, and Letters. You can succeed no matter where you go.

The head of the entire Lied Transplant center, Alan Langnas in Omaha, NE is a DO. This is a very large regional transplant center that services at least Iowa and Missouri going west to Utah because I've met people there from all the places in between.
