Do Wayne State IM residents get commonly selected for Wayne State Fellowships?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wayne keeps some of its own for fellowships and has a good reputation for placing people into other programs. They have good numbers for competitive specialties like Cards/GI, and there is an abundance of research projects to make yourself competitive for whatever it is you are aiming for. The best part is that the PD and the Chair are very enthusiastic, supportive, and well known. How many people they keep for their fellowships - depends on the specialty and the year. You get to see a lot of pathology as a WSU IM resident so they like to take their own. However, like any big university, they still look into getting a diverse class. Hope this helps.

Based on what I heard from my friend, for the year 2005, their Cards department selected no internal candidates. I also heard that their cardiology department is in tatters, with most of the good attendings having left. They have a new chair and I don't know how much impact DMC's financial struggle will have, in their effort to recruit new attendings.

Silo I hope you have a good source... I think the class of 2005 handout was given to us at the interview. I know at least two people from the previous match (i.e. entering this year) that stayed at Wayne. I know that they take at least 1 each year. Cards department did go through a major change 5 years ago, but since has been doing well. As for the Chair, he is well known, I know someone who has had a great experience doing hypertension research with him. I enjoyed working with him as well and got a great letter of recommendation from him this year 🙂.

Spittz03 - I should have been clear. I was talking about the new chief (chair) of Cards department. You are referring to IM chair.
