Do we need to know exceptions for Ionization energy/ Electron Affinity?

I'd say it's worth knowing, especially why on a conceptual level. If you understand the stability of the half-filled sub-shells, you will be able to tell intuitively where these exceptions occur and why.

I've definitely seen it in Chad's quizzes. Can't remember if I've seen it anywhere outside of that, but he did emphasize periodic trends more than most other resources.

Is it necessary to know these exceptions:
-Group 5 has higher I.E than group 6
-Groups with Be/N are lower than other groups

Understanding the general trends are enough. As one moves across the table, Ionization energy and electron affinity generally do increase. Yes....a few exceptions are noted.....For example N vs O.....P vs S for Ionization energy........why ? Draw out the electron configuration and the result should be evident. The DAT will test you on general knowledge,,,,,Not esoteric questions .......For example......which atom has the greatest electron affinity ? The answer is shocking..... Chlorine !!!! Will this show up ? Not a chance ......but understand the trend.
