Hey Everyone

Well the subject speaks for itself... i have no idea what the bench test is about and what exactly we have to prepare, but i paid a fortune on all applications so far and will continue paying..i dont think i can afford to buy all the equipment for practice! Would it be stupid of me to go for the bench test without any preparation? I mean wouldnt the years of experience that i had in my home country as a dentist be enough for me? Anyone gone thru this?

If your experience is recent then you will somehow manage to pull up a good job in your bench test. If not, you definitely need to practice.
However, if I were you, I would at least practice 2-3 crown preparations just to get the hang of working on Ivorine teeth which I never worked on and I am sure you also might not have worked on. So, in my opinion, the answer to your question is 'YES' you need to practice for the bench exam no matter how much experienced you are.

Basically the equipments are not very expensive. try to buy 1-a 150 psi compressor with 4 gallon capacity and pressure regulator at the local store.
2-http://cgi.ebay.com/Portable-Dental-Turbine-Unit-Working-handpieces-/150494162321?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230a26ad91#ht_8277wt_962
this one is an example, you can fine a cheeper.
3-http://cgi.ebay.com/Super-Trac-Air-Turbine-Handpiece-/320587764224?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa4851200#ht_500wt_1131

4- dental form and extra teeth,
5- definitely some burs, wedges , hatchet , explorer and stuff like that which can be found at any dental supply store, or universities.

totally it will be something about 600-700 $
Hope it helps

You did not count other costs:
Exam fee: 350 $ (UCSF)
Flight ticket: 300 - 500 $
Hotel in SF: 130 $/per night, three nights would be 400 $ (tax not included);
Dress suit: 200-300 $

So the total cost would be at least 2000 us dollars.

Thank you for your suggestions guys, i am still confused though! last time i worked as a dentist was 4 months ago, is that recent enough? isnt there like centers or sth that i can go practice in and pay by hour? ok that was a stupid question!

I think there are centers like that in California but they would work out to be costlier than buying your own instruments which you can sell later and recover most of your invested money. I am sure there will be a lot of buyers for the same.
Don't be confused - YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE ON AT LEAST 2-3 TEETH irrespective of experience.

Thanks my friend... U're right, i cant just take my chances

Hi
Have you managed to buy the stuff? If yes, can you please help me with where did you buy them from and the specifications?

Thanks,

with bench exams, the rule is _

Practice. or come back next year.

honestly I decided later on not to buy them so I have no idea where to get them. Try checking the classifieds section on sdn

guys dont even think about money, if thats the difference between fullfilling your dreams or not getting in...i must have spent at least $6000 till now with applications and instruments to practice and it was well worth it..... Once you are in school you have loans and once you are out money is never going to be a problem but yes you have to spend money to make money initially.

I have been through situation where what happens if you do not practice and my suggestion is when you spending a lot and working hard for an admission than it is worth to pay little amount and learn for bench test. I have posted an add. about learning it and i can help whoever wants to learn and will give all my instruments along with learning in school environment. Let me know if any wants to learn. PM me for additional question.

Hi, please can you give me any suggestions in buying burs. I searched in http://www.henryschein.com/us, but they have only packages than are around 20-30 dollars and more. I would have to spend like 300 dollars. Is that the only way to get them?
Thanks for your response.

google local dental stores in your area and go and buy them or go to the closest dental school near you they will have a store inside where you can buy it individually

ofcourse!!!!!!!!!! no matter how many years you practice on patients, its never ideal as compared to what the schools want. Besides the whole feel of the acrylic tooth is wayyyy different than what you actually do in patients...its worlds apart and definitely a big deciding factor..do duggans!! its the best in the whole US 🙂
