Hello everyone...

The reason for my thread is that the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine is hosting this year's National Baricua Latino Health Organization's National Conference.

This conference will have tons of AWESOME speakers, including our keynote speaker, Joxel Garcia from the World Health Organization....

Did I mention that the NIH will be there with information on Research, Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities???

Are you applying for residency soon??? Come visit our Residency fair with over twenty hospital residency representatives!

The conference will have tons of workshops on topics such as Medicine in the underserved population, OBGYN, Surgery, Health Policy and more!

We are also offering a Pre-Med Section on How to get in and survive in Medical School!

The best part of all???? It's in NY! So, you can make a vacation of it!

The conference is taking place on April 3rd. We will have informational fliers available soon with details on the different workshops...so, if you are interested in hearing more about this conference and spreading the word to your school, please email me at [email protected] so that I can send more information.

im confused. is this a question or an announcement?

Yeah, this is weird... I actually didn't know how good it looked on paper to start with, but now after reading this "ad," I'm even more confused... 😕

To answer the question in the title: I don't think med schools really give a darn if you go to a conference or not. You'd be much better off volunteering or getting some work experience. Go to conferences if you are interested in what is being presented but don't go just to impress a school.

it's a different story if you're presenting a poster or doing a oral presentation

Yeah but the OP isn't talking about presenting.. the OP said attending a conference.

the question is what did you get out of the conference? if you went just to get free s**t, then probably not.......but if you did present/meet someone from that school there/got inspired, then there you go. but it in your app if you feel that it impacted you somehow

I doubt it that med schools would even care. In fact, it might work against you to put it on your application as it would make you seem pretentious.

Hate to dissagree with you all, but I do. Going to conference provides lots of opportunities for networking, learning new and interesting breakthroughs in medicine, and gives you lots of fodder for future applications and interviews. I have attended several since starting a position here at NIH, and I honestly think that they have helped to broaden my base of knowledge. Go to it, it's only one day!

I went to a bioethics conference once (poster w00t w00t). Anyway it was fairly interesting. Some stuff were truly boring though ;p.

I also went to a physicians conference with my father once (the meeting was in an area i was visiting). Nothing great about it. I never got access to anything and it's not like i would understand what they were talking about. The only good thing that i remember was the free food in nice restaurants 🙂

Hey all,

Don't treat a conference as a resume-building thingy, treat it as a learning experience.

My experience at all of my interviews so far is that the interviewers don't care so much about what EC you have in your app (Cause most people have similar activities), but specifically what you got out of them.

Another cliche but honest advice from me.

couldn't agree with you more dude :horns:

Hey Everyone- I would have replied to these responses sooner- but we've been preparing for exams.

Yes, this is an add for a conference in April....and NO, I did not mean to confuse you guys about what looks good on an application. This is a great opportunity to mingle with medical students, NIH and some awesome guest speakers. This is how you make your connections.

Especially for you pre-meds, we have Directors/Deans of Admissions of medical schools attending for a Question/Answer session. You will get the chance to talk to them afterwards, introduce yourself....get your questions answered...ect.

The focus of the conference (besides having a premed workshop) is to discuss issues that affect the underserved population.

So, if you are interested in meeting other premeds, medical students, faculty, staff, deans and directors....the NIH...residency representatives from over twenty hospitals....then....
