I graduated in 2007 with bachelors in biology with 2.8 GPA. I have taken OAT Two time, the score were low for English portion (1st -->200 2nd --> 260). I had 300 and above for other section, cumulative was 320 . I am not sure if I should take oat third time or not. I am doing Master in Biology to improve my chances. The biggest question I am facing, Is this for me??? Would I survive optometry school looking at my stats??? The writing is barrier for me, it is not improving. My question is, even if I get decent score for Oat, Is this for me??? I would like to thank you guys for advise and help.

i think this question would be better suited for the "pre-optometry" section.

This profession depends a lot on communicating effectively with patients and other health care professionals. Why is writing such a barrier for you? Perhaps taking an introductory writing class and English class at a community college could help. This might help if you do decide to retake the OAT

The question that you pose worries me: "Is this for me??" because only you can answer this question. Optometry school will not be easy. In my opinion, one has to be passionate about this profession. That passion will help drive you to complete the coursework successfully. I think you should take some time to reflect upon your self to see if optometry is really for you. Have you shadowed any optometrists or worked in any offices/retail stores? If you haven't, this may help you find your answer.

Good luck

Sez it all 👍

if reading your post, it sounds like english is your weak area and sorry to assume, but you probably have poor english communication skills as well. a few of my classmates arn't proficient in speaking the language and are having trouble dealing with patients and in communicating with the doctors and staff at school and in clinic. just some food for thought. however, if you're able to handle the academics (2.8 raises doubts), and if you're passionate about this profession and know that you will contribute to it, i don't see why you wouldn't give it your all to achieve that goal. nevertheless, a certain level of language proficiency is absolutely needed if you want to get through school and be successful there after. on a isde note, i've shadowed several doctors who run very successful clinics in areas working mainly with specific ethnic groups. good luck to ya.

Why do you want to be in optometry? If it's a field about which you're passionate, your chances of success might be higher than if you just want a job in medicine and you figure an O.D. is easier to get than an M.D. Yes, an O.D. should be easier, and it ought to be less of a challenge to get in to a college of optometry than into one of general medicine, but if you're struggling with the sciences, now, and you just want to get through them so you can get into an O.D.-granting institution, and you want to do that just so you can get a solid job, and you want to do that simply because everyone in this kind of economy needs work with decent pay, I don't see how you'll manage to do well in optometry school.

So, why do you want to be an optometrist?

Nah, he's probably better for the MD degree. Maybe Radiology or Pathology. No talking involved

The OD degree is focused on the primary care model, and speaking the language would definitely help. Unlike your future, grades and tests do not make you a better Eye Care Professional!

Good luck with your basic sciences, don't study too hard!
