It is 8:30, and I wanted a quiet place to study, and a lot of the academic buildings here on campus are not locked. Do you think I can get in trouble for going into a classroom and studying late at night? I feel like there is some reason I shouldn't be alone in the building.

No, I do it all the time just make sure to have your student ID on you.

Inquire about any potential quite areas on campus with student services or go elsewhere. You have already been in trouble with your school and essentially been given a second chance. Keep your head down and don't go anywhere you do not have any permission to be.
I guess what I'm asking is do you think I'm breaking a rule by doing this? It's not like there is a sign somewhere that says not to do this.

How about you ask and make sure. I would hate to see a thread that says "Help I was given an IA for trespassing on campus after hours do I still have a chance?"

That sucks. My undergrad campus library was open until midnight Sun - Fri and 24hrs a day two weeks before finals and the week of finals.
Lucky. The libraries here close at 8 on Fridays and I think 9 on Saturdays. Only one of the libraries are open 24 hours during the normal week.

I used to do that all time. Once a security guard came in and said you need to leave, I did. That's all there was. But if you know that's against the rules, don't do it.

It's late. You should stay in one place and make due. Besides, you don't need to be hanging out by yourself in various school buildings, especially given your rough history with the school. If you have to ask something like this, you probably shouldn't be doing it, right? Stay out of trouble, mate.

While I always think you should err on the side of caution and just find an alternative that you know for sure is safe and legal, if there are no signs that indicate hours during which the building can be used and otherwise nothing posted anywhere saying that you cannot be in a building after X hour or whatever, I don't see anything wrong with studying there. I used to do it all the time with some friends, there was a great "hidden" classroom in a building on the edge of campus where we would study. Probably not the safest thing for us to be doing, but there were usually other people studying elsewhere in the building. Security guards patrol the buildings after a certain time (like 10pm or midnight) but as long as you had your student ID on you, they were fine with people studying there. If they didn't want you in there, they'd lock the doors and/or have signs posted.

You can also simply just call the school (I'm sure you have an information desk or something) and ask if you can study in X building after X time.

I pay a buttload of money to go to school. I don't feel entitled often, but come on....staying late in a classroom? It's not going to hurt anyone.

I used to stay late after one building closed and actually made friends with the late night janitor.

Plus, if you get an "IA for trespassing so you can study in a quiet space" how will that hurt you in the application process?

How about you go drink beer instead of study Friday night??

Study and if someone tells you "you need to leave"... pack up your things and go. It's not like your in there making a mess, spilling coffee everywhere, eating food, making ruckus, throwing a party etc.

Lol if you'r wondering if you can get in trouble for this, wait till you see my school. Any unoccupied space that is unlocked becomes a study spot at night. I have studied in the teacher's lounge located in our social studies building, a biochemistry lab that I got into (it locks at a certain time), and a secretary's office.
Ok studying in someone's office is a little too far for me haha.

But yea I've studied late in lots of classrooms both in ugrad and med school, I don't think they'll care unless you're throwing a party or something.

@Tawantinsuyu heed to this guy's advice, he made it to MD/PhD program

At our school this was expected/encouraged/what-do-you-mean-you-haven't-done-it for science majors. Each department had its own common room, and would throw 'Snacks' once/wk with goodies for anyone who wanted to come. The profs would usually come to snacks too and hang out or bring food, especially if they knew there was a big assignment due the next day and people would have questions.

The humanities buildings were locked down tight and the guards were jerks about it, even if the prof had a paper due 'by 8am the next day' but the building closed at 5pm. They were jerks about it because the humanities profs were conceited jerks about it, too.

This was one of the main reasons I was so glad to be a science major.

Rule of thumb. If it isn't locked, go for it. But if something ends up missing..well..

I never worried about locked either. Heck, one of the most popular pasttimes in my school was breaking onto the roofs of as many buildings as possible.

If you're just studying and you haven't been warned before, you'll probably be fine. Worst case you just say you didn't know and you won't do it again and you'll be on your way.*

*this statement might or might not apply if you are a URM, depending on how racist public safety is at your school.

I guess whether you can get in trouble for this depends on the school. At my university, it was discouraged to be in classrooms alone after hours on campus. This was mainly because of the obvious safety concerns and also because things always ended up missing (yet they refused to lock the doors sometimes). If an incident occurred nearby you would have to explain why you were in a classroom by yourself late at night after regularly scheduled classes. Depending on who caught you and what kind of mood they were in, you either received a warning or a minor infraction. This is how things are done at my university and if you already have institutional actions or other red flags, you do yourself no favors getting in trouble for something so trivial. In another thread, op revealed that he made a threat online which was tracked by his school that led to police being involved. He was subsequently placed on probation for that and I would advise that he proceeds with caution from here on out no matter how minor the issue may appear.

.
nvm!

Dude has anyone actually gotten in trouble for this?

I always studied in the classrooms in the engineering building after hours. I had a student ID to let me in. Shoot one time I even brought my xbox and connected it to the projector (roommate was being a dick)

I never had any problems

If you're URM you can stay until midnight, everyone else has to get out before 8pm. IN THE NAME OF DIVERSITY
