Hi, I am curretly senior in college.
I know it is kinda late to decide my future path, but now I'm sure that I want to become an optometrist.
I want to know the requirments and general information about optometrists from professionals.
Like How hard is OAT... How to study them...
what is minimum GPA to get in good optometrist school.. how much good gpa needed to get a job right after graduation (optometrist)
Also how much shadowing//internship is needed..

This is my spec::

I am an ESL student. English is my second langauge.
Major = Zoology
I have about 2.9~3.0 GPA.
Some volunteer work (Church, student association)
Social chair of student association.
No shadowing experience.. no internship experience..

I really need this help..

I just need some good point informations for student like me who do not speak english as much as others.

Optomestrists!! help me !!!!!!!! please!

Not to sound mean, but you would of seen the other 9000 threads like this one if you used the search function =}.

Also, google schools and what they require.

You absolutely need shadowing experience and letters of recommendation in order to apply to optometry school, so you need to start contacting local ODs to set something up if you are serious about this. Also, purchase an OAT prep book like the Kaplan one in order to get an idea of the information you need to know to be successful on that test.

anything is possible.

1. Shadow to get experience..how do you know you want to become an eye doctor if you have never worked with one
2. Get kaplan course books for OAT test

Well, first I would like to ask if you have never shadowed or had any internship experience, then WHY do you want to become an optometrist? Why not an MD, podiatrist, dentist, physician assistant, nurse, Ph.D, etc?

Second, if you decide you are serious about becoming an optometrist, I would definitely recommend taking some post-bac courses (graduate level pre-medicine courses) in order to prove that even though you have a significantly low GPA, that you are able to handle the rigorous optometry classes. Post bacc programs have the courses structured instead of you taking them by themselves (Biochemistry, Anatomy Physiology, Immunology, etc).

Hope this helps some.

Dear Meibomian.

Deciding Optometry out of all the medical fields was not challenging at all to me. My drive to becoming an optometrist was one of the general interests since I was a kid. Becoming the optometrist for me would be more than just a job, I always wanted to help people in ways that I could make changes for them such as improving patient's quality of life by improving their visions. I do know how it is to have bad vision because I have been wearing glasses since I was 9 years old and most of my family members went through same problem. I always wondered if I could fix the problems rather than just 'let it be'. There are so many opportunities I could possible involve with if I become an optometrist.
